Dartmouth entered a four-man team in the National Collegiate A.A. Swimming Association Championships held at Yale on March 29 and 30. The entries were Ed Tevald (Navy) in both low and high board diving, Jay Urstadt '49 in the 200-yard breaststroke, and a medley relay team composed of Dana Jackson '49, Roland Higgins '43 and Jay Urstadt '49. The latter established himself as one of the leading contenders in the country by finishing third in the final of the 200-yard breaststroke, establishing a. new Dartmouth record in the process. Completely inexperienced in this event before this year, his improvement over the short season (from December first) was characterized by Coach Karl Michael as the most phenomenal he has ever seen.

Ed Tevald turned in a creditable performance in the diving competition finishing 7th in a field of 22 and only narrowly missing qualification for the finals. The medley relay was the seventh fastest in a field of 16, turning in a qualifying time which would have won the event in the 1945 championships. A final and interesting note, one which doubtless gave Coach Michael a malicious chuckle, was the finaL score of the meet. Two swimming teams. finished (far in the ruck) in the following order: Dartmouth (with 3 points) and Yale (with 1 point). Sweet are the uses of adversity.
