Allah, be praised! The tide turneth. The first to respond to our plea for up-to-the-minute dope via Bill Shuldenfrei, were JimMcElroy, Gale Freeman, Maury Whittinghill,Ned Stanford, and Sey Burge.
The Rev. Jim, as you all know, is Rector of St. Mark's Church in Toledo, Ohio. His home address is 1712 Potomac Drive, Toledo 7. Jim is active in the Toledo Alumni Association as we reported and also attended the Agents' Meeting in Chicago last year. He has the temerity to admit that he still sees and speaks to that reprobate of all reunion evildoers Beany Thorn. Jim, Betty, and the two kids took an extended camping trip to Portland, Oregon, last summer hitting Spokane, Seattle, Lake Louise, and Banff—a real postgraduate course in outing chubbing.
Maury and Doris Whittinghill are in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where Professor Maury is in the Department of Zoology at the University of North Carolina. By rights, us Virginians shouldn't mention those Carolinians, but Maury's letter was too interesting to let local bias rule. He says the
"sleeping bags got their first workout on top of Moosilauke last September 4, when we moved up from Agassiz Cabin, all four of us and the dog, to find the Winter Cabin thoroughly studded with wet paint signs. We entered anyway. Warren made the entire climb, but I couldn't get him to leave the cabin to go to the summit after supper. The weather was perfect, and I must say that the views have been vastly improved on the upper part of Beaverbrook Trail since the old hurricane of '38. The whole north country seemed just as wonderful as ever with no allowances necessary for the tricks of balmy memory.
"Several of us are planning to make a little something of Dartmouth Night this year. One Bud Dutton, a recent graduate who is now a graduate student here in sociology, my former major, is here and sparking it. Dick Weaver is a new arrival on the teaching staff. Unfortunately there have been two losses during the last year. Prof. Groves, the marriage and family authority, died, and Frank Erickson has left the Department of Geography here to teach at B.U. I hope we may find some other recent grads from a little note in the Daily Tarheel."
Incidentally, Maury and Doris plan to do
some climbing in the Blue Ridge Mountains this fall.
Ned Stanford writes from St. Paul. He is an Associate Professor and Assistant Librarian at the University of Minnesota. Ned's home address is 2075 Scudder Ave., St. Paul 8, Minn. This is old news, but for you all who do not know it, Ned and Maverette have one son, James Edward, who was born Nov. 30, 1946. Ned is chairman of the Board on Personnel Administration of the American Library Association. His description of the Minnesota Library makes Baker look like the Howe in Hanover.
A NEWSY LETTER
Gale Freeman is attorney for the First National Bank of Chicago. He and Frances are strong arguments for making Dartmouth co-ed with Nancy, Linda, and Clare, their three very fine daughters. Gale wasn't very informative about his own activities but he passes along the following information which is all new to your secretary:
"A. Thad 'Alby Smith. Here's one fellow you are not up on. After Dartmouth and Harvard Law School, Alby practiced law in Boston, but developed as a hobby an intense interest in the stock market which, surprisingly enough, turned out to be extremely profitable. He married Romula Robb and had a very satisfactory practice and a happy life until the war, when he went into the Navy and served as the intelligence officer for a torpedo squadron on the aircraft carrier 'Ranger,' spending almost his entire time in the North Atlantic. While he was away Romula devoted some time to her second great love, the theater, and achieved the success of the role of the nurse in 'Harvey,' starring with Frank Fay and Jimmy Stewart.
"Thad and Romula have become interested in the West and are thinking about settling in the Denver area, Alby already having gone out there to reconnoitre.
" 'Bill' Waterman, of the firm of Lane and Waterman in Davenport, is a very important cog in the legal and social circles of that city. The same musical interest which made him head of the Glee Club in college has made him very active in the bringing of a symphony orchestra to Davenport, and he and his wife and their two lovely daughters have become an important part of that community.
" 'Bill' Little has been managing the 'Little Shows' (trade fairs or shows for the gift, lamp and other industries) and has spent his leisure in between seasons traveling luxuriously. He is now on a plane tour of the West.
"William B. 'Jim' Swift, having won citations from the United States, British, and French governments for his work in planning the invasion, returned to this country and after a short period on the West Coast has been appointed sales manager in this part of the country for the Goodyear Yellow Pine Company."
Dr. Sey Burge is practicing obstetrics and gynecology in Evanston, Ill. His home address is 1420 Davis, Evanston, Ill. Sey writes that he had two fine games of golf with FredSlaughter and Oz Bliss (handicap 2). He saw Bill Conklin last spring. Bill is one of the best chest surgeons in the Northwest. That question concerning the vacation has caused several cryptic replies as for example Sey's: "What vacation? Three and a half years in the Navy will have to do us for a while."
Jim Godfrey and Keith and Mrs. Shearman were at the Inn recently. Jim is practicing law in Concord, N. H., and Keith is living in Brooklyn.
The Petroleum Refiner of Houston, Texas, carries a picture of Jack Cunningham. Jack looks exactly as he did in 1931 with the exception that the cookie duster on the upper lip has developed into a full-grown brush. Jack has been named manager of the J. P. Devine Company plant at Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was formerly research engineer and manufacturing division engineer for Elliott Company in Jeannette, Pa.
The Times and Kew Gardens Post carried the announcement of the marriage of Margot Stern and Joe Rusky on August 15. Mrs. Rusky studied in Switzerland and at Lycee Moliere in Paris. Joe studied at Bonn and Munich and was graduated from Columbia Law School. During the war, Joe was with the army in Africa and E.T.O. Welcome to '31, Margot.
Red Rolfe is scouting for the Detroit Tigers now. Hal Andres is organizing the gang for the '31 get-together before the Harvard-Dartmouth game. Wish we could be with Hal and "Satch" Johnson for this pre-game celebration.
Oh Brother, how this class of ours moves around! Bert Brock, George Phillips, HalRadin and Joe Rushton are Californians. George Conklin, Dr. Art Davis, Dr. John Feltner, Dr. By Garson, Dick Henry, Bob Huntley,Ernie Moore, George Burnett, Ed Murray and Max Schultz are New Yorkers. Tommy Eagan has the alphabetical address of L. O. & T. Co., Ltd., Aruba, N. W. I. Dave Larrabee is back east again with the Staso Milling Co., Bound Brook, N. J. Al Schumacher has the address of Resortes Mecanicos, Monte Everest, Mexico, D. F. Hal Spinney is at Grub Hill Rd., Round Lake, Ill. It isn't too early even now to get in touch' with the M.C. of the Boston get-together at Groton next spring. Those who were there will remember that HankJohnson has assumed entire and sole responsibility for that event. Sign up with Henry now at 32 Jameson Rd., Newton 58, Mass.
Herb Spragne is with the N. E. Tel. & Tel. Co., 22 Norman St., Salem, Mass. Raoul Herrera is at 5a Avenida Sur No. 36, Guatemala City, Guatemala. Chuck O'Neill is at 505 Fairfield Ave., Bridgeport, Conn. EddieO'Connor is still in Maiden, at 327 Salem Street.
