Last month the news and letters poured in so that I fully expected at least half of my column would be returned by the editors due to lack of space. This month the letters have been as scarce as a snowball in this neck of the woods all winter, so I'll scrape the bottom of the drawer for the news that Bill Schulden-frei has sent along from time to time. Said Bill, Charlie McAllister, Stud Studwell, ErnieMoore and Yours Truly are getting together soon in New York for a '31 bull session so the fresh news should be plentiful next time.
It was good to hear recently that SamGroves has been elected Vice-President of United-Carr Fastener Corporation by the Board of Directors and that Frank Hodson has been elected President of Eppens Smith Company in New York. This is one of the oldest coffee and tea houses in the country. '31 is getting to the top of the heap fast. A welcome letter from Bill Benger, Clarks Green, Pa., says: "It has been eight years since I last wrote in to change the records of 1931, but put Marie and me down as three-timers. We added a boy to our list on January 3, 1949 and we have named him J. Craig Benger. He started life at 7 lbs. 6 oz. and has already reached 10 lbs. 4 oz. Never run into any of our class around here and as a matter of fact seem to miss connections when I do get near any '31ers. Expect to take about six kids up to Hanover this Fall to look the place over. For the past three years we have taken them to different colleges each year and now it is my chance to interest them in Dartmouth." Bill has an excellent plan there, something that should be more widespread among Alumni.
Dr. and Mrs. Paul Crehan and family spent Lincoln's Birthday in Hanover. They are living in Medford, Mass. Dan Denham was chairman of the ticket committee for the spring dance of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Long Island held in Garden City. Joe Merriam has joined the firm of Cresap, McCormick and Paget, management engineers, as a partner. Before going with them Joe was with Macy's in New York and Kerr's in Oklahoma City. George Miller's address is 936 River Road, Chenango Bridge, N. Y. He writes: "I deserted the Metropolitan Life (and the Long Island R.R.) to become Assistant Actuary of the Security Mutual Life in Birmingham. Like it fine and the latch string's out to '31ers."
Don Crane writes to Bill: "As you may know I've been with A. and P. ever since Dartmouth days and I am in charge of Selective Employment and Termination Procedures for the entire company. You see, we are composed of 38 units throughout the U. S. and Canada, each a complete organization in itself but with policies and procedures directed from N. Y. Headquarters. Very interesting, but it keeps me traveling too damned much." A note from Harry Reed brings us up to date on his family. He has two boys, Francis 16 and Randolph 8. Do we have any '31 offspring over 16? A clipping from the New York State Banker, dated 9/20/48 must have gotten way back in the drawer. My apologies and congratulations to Howie Crosse who was, on that date, made Manager of the Bank Relations Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York
Another note to Bill from Bob Asher, Office of the U. S. Representative to ECE, U. S. Consulate, Geneva, Switzerland says: "I transferred from our Embassy in London last September and opened the office of the U. S. Representative to the Economic Commission for Europe here in Geneva. Been having a grand time and doing what I fondly hope is a useful job. Hope to get home for awhile this summer though. Grosvenor Square looks very different than it did, when I saw you in the Q.M.Depot in London back in January of 1945 or was it late in 1944?"
Bert Brock has moved to 4505 Woodley Rd., Encino, Calif. Dick Chase is with the New England Coal and Coke Cos., 250 Stuart St., Boston. Is this another step up the ladder, Dick? BillSwift's new address is 1942 Portsmouth Ave., Westchester, 111. Bob Wallace checks in from 111 N. Broadway, White Plains, N. Y. MartyZinn is in Texas, living at 4342 Clay in Houston. Lloyd Bowen is another of our rapidly growing California contingent, living at 1712 N. Ogden Drive, Los Angeles, and Prof. EdReichest is teaching at Lake Forest College, 19 College Campus, Lake Forest, 111.
Some very belated address changes include two professors, one lawyer and one physician. Hal Lane is Assistant Professor of Astronomy at Colgate, his address, 47 Broad Street, Hamilton, N. Y. Frank Nichols is teaching History at the University of Massachusetts and living at 122D Bates Street, Fort Devens, Mass. Lawyer Marty O'Connor is practicing in Elizabeth, N. J. and living at 610 Salem Ave., there. Doctor tor Hugh Neely has his office at 30 East 40th Street, N. Y. C.
Unless you want a soliloquy or dissertation on the trials and tribulations of a damn yankee in the deep south for the next two months, it behooves you to take pen in hand and get some news in. If you think you are too busy, turn the job over to your wife. As a matter of fact I would much prefer to hear from her, the twentieth isn't too far off.
