Sunday, September 12, established a day which should be prominent in the history of the Southern California Association. It was the date of the first deep sea fishing party.

A sleepy-eyed but enthusiastic crowd gathered at San Pedro Harbor 7:30 in the morning, boarded the Nelek and set out to test their luck and skill with rod and reel.

Plenty of skill was demonstrated in various gradations of form, but the fish couldn't be convinced—to put it mildly—fishing was poor. The catch consisted of a few halibut and calico bass. Peter Koelsh '42 took top honors with an eighteen pound halibut and would have won the pool except for the fact that the Vice President in charge of pools forgot to organize it.

The sea was calm, the weather clear and cool, all of which helped to make the trip thoroughly pleasant and successful. Credit should be given to Steve Valensi '4O and BudAdams '46 who helped plan the event. Photographic records were made by official photographer Will Hays '31.

President Jack Reeder '25 is busy making plans for the fall and winter seasons. The Dartmouth Night meeting will be held at the Knickerbocker Hotel in Hollywood. TomCarpenter '25, General Secretary of Stanford University, will travel south to sound the theme of this event.

Starting with the fourth Friday in November and continuing in each successive month through May, the Hollywood luncheon meetings will also be held at the Knickerbocker. Interesting Dartmouth personalities in the community will be presented. Success for the 1948-49 season seems assured since Chairman Jack Rourke '40 has announced that WalterWanger '15, Ted Geisel '25 and CollierYoung '30 have accepted assignments.

Murray Hawkins '19, Chairman of the Freshman Committee, collected all available undergraduates for a luncheon held at the University Club September 9, for the purpose of introducing the freshmen to the upperclassmen. Plans were made for the revival of the California Club in Hanover.

And so goes the round of Dartmouth life in Southern California!

CALIFORNIANS ON THE BOUNDING MAIN: A deep sea fishing party on September 12 provided a wonderful outing for these sixteen members of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Southern California. Leon Rothschild '24, perennial secretary and club sparkplug, is at right center, wearing the Panama hat.

PRIZE CATCH: Pete Koelsch '42, with a strong left arm, hoists the evidence that fish actually were caught on the California alumni deep sea party. He has an 18-pound halibut securely hooked.
