Dartmouth Night was in town again October so, and 60 of the locals gathered for dinner and doings at the Chapman Park. Between courses, President Bill Adams '34 coaxed some out-of-town guests to their feet —legendary baseball figure Chief Meyers '09 from San Bernardino, football ditto JohnnyAllen '23 from New York, Nate Colwell '25 out here from Washington to put the bite on stars for Treasury Department radio shows, and Jack Rourke '40 from the everynight TV show that has been keeping him from meetings. After Adams read the traditional president's telegram to another president, man name of Dickey, a special Dartmouth Night recording carried the lot of us back to Mr. Dickey's home town for a magic twenty minutes; the Hello-from-Hanover recording, which originated with us last year, this year was sent to alumni groups all over the country. Famous NBC commentator Elmer Peterson carried the speaking chores with encouraging, but stimulating, remarks on the current world situation. Bob Williams '26 and Dan Dinsmore '16 handled the songleading with their usual aplomb; the notes for this report were neatly gathered by GarthJones '48, boy reporter, and Dave Boyle '40 supervised running some swell Hanover film on the Michigan moral victory and last year's Winter Carnival. Very nice evening.
The next Friday, also at the Chapman Park Hotel, a smaller but louder group checked in for the first of a series of football luncheons. The notion is a switch on the old play-by-play deals, and is really an idea—lunch at 12.15 ($1.85) is followed by an air-expressed 20-minute film digest of a recent Dartmouth game; you're back in the parking lot and off for the office at 1.15. This is set for every Friday during the season. Future dates: Cornell December 1, and Princeton December 7.
The new So. California Directory should be in the mail some time this month. Fathered and mothered by Bill Adams and secretary Leon Rothschild, in the order named, this will be the most complete and up-to-date directory of any club in the country. When the lads made the final corrections this week, they found that in the three months since "final" copy was submitted we have had 50 routine changes of address plus 20 departures and 25 new arrivals in the Los Angeles area. Restless.
A Christmas affair is in the works, and in the meantime remember the Friday luncheons. See you there.
