Four members of the great class of 1920 have been uniquely honored by a gift of "Four Trees for Four Fathers" made by James D. Vail 111 '50, and his wife, Pegget. Jim is the son of James D. Vail Jr.

These trees have been planted between Wilson and New Hampshire Halls and span a semicircular distance of about 40 feet, with a bronze marker in the ground in a central location among the trees.

The four men listed on the plaque, who had been such "wonderful fathers" to Jim Vail during their lifetime, are his real father, plus Albert W. Frey, "surrogate father" in Washington D.C.; Foster McGaw, a "marvelous stepfather"; and Frank Corbin, "a warm and supportive father-in-law."

The Vails have made other generous gifts to the College, but we are especially proud to report the four trees.

An August note from Joyce Sawyer of Rutland reported the death on December 27, 1993, of Eva Hill, widow of John "Bottoms"Hill. Ms. Sawyer adds, "Both John and Eva were avid supporters of Dartmouth and the class of 1920." Their home address, 20 Dartmouth Street, was a symbol of that support.

Happy Thanksgiving.
