Members of our class are beginning to become active in official capacities in the various alumni associations and clubs. This year BillRolph is Secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Honolulu. A little closer to home we find Frank Edmands in the same job for the North Shore Dartmouth Club of Massachusetts.

Bob L. Allen, former Newsletter Editor, has kept the class represented in "Dartmouth in Portrait 1949" by having his picture of the main entrance of Carpenter Hall selected to fill the August slot in the line-up.

A few weeks ago business again took me to Cleveland. This time I saw Art Pounds and Charlie Williams and talked to Bob Pease on the telephone. I had the pleasure of holding Charlie's 10 month old son Ricky on my lap. I say it was a pleasure since my own 7 month old Jim is always too busy to sit still for long. Ricky and I got along famously. Bob Pease, who is taking a sales training course with Republic Steel, passed along the word that he is engaged to Joan Phillips and that wedding plans are in the making.

By now you have all received the second Newsletter of the current year from Don DeB.Campbell. If you have not sent him the completed information sheet about yourself I am sure Don will be glad to have it now. Don gave some figures about the size of the class. I just want to add my two cents worth and say that there are still 15 undergraduates on campus. A number of them will graduate in February. Nick Sandoe, who has recently returned to Hanover to assist George Colton on all fund campaigns, has promised me a full report on these men in the near future.

This news is a little stale but I was fairly rushed meeting my deadline last month. There were four members of our class in attendence at the annual Christmas luncheon for undergraduates and prospective undergraduates here in Detroit. Bill Merrill was home from Yale Law School and put in an appearance along with Tom Candler and DaveMott. Your secretary made the total of four.

Dr. Pete Beck and Dr. Bill Hatt have joined our overseas members. Pete is in Bern, Switzerland and Bill is at Queens' Hospital in Honolulu.

Among recent visitors at the Hanover Inn were Ellie Burbank, Mr. and Mrs. Bob L.Allen, and Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Watkins.

Bill Hartshorn is a sales trainee for the Jos. T. Ryerson & Son, Inc. John Shannon is a medical student in New York City. BobHacker is a Buick dealer in Davenport, lowa. Olav Passburg is now with the Sammy Mason Flight Academy in Big Bear, Calif. Capt. Leland Stacy is now stationed with the U. S. Air Force at Grenier Field, Manchester, N. H.

Norm Brown, an employee of Shell Oil, has been placed on the Ail-American team selected by that company from the former college football stars now in its employ. Norm is a member of Shell's Boston Division.

Al Bucksbaum, social science teacher in the Bennington, Vt. high school, had to sing "Men of Dartmouth" while wearing full Indian headdress as the result of missing his question in a "Truth or Consequences" assembly held at the school. I am sure that Al will be pleased to see this reported here.

Vic Smith is to marry Vesta Elizabeth Starrett of Medford, Mass. on Jan. 15, 1949 (remember this is being written in January). Tom Moran and Mary Julia Gill were to be married December 27 in Latrobe, Penna. Mrs. Moran attended Ogontz Junior College, Philadelphia. Tom is on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Tom is a graduate of Jefferson Medical School. Dr. Johnny Brooks is engaged to Florence H. Fischer of Germantown, Pa. Miss Fischer is a graduate of the Abington, Pa. Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Johnny is a graduate of the Temple University School of Medicine and is now a resident physician at the Abington Memorial Hospital. Lan MacKinnon and Miss Mary Jane Shortlidge are planning a June wedding. Miss Shortlidge attended Westover School, Briarcliff Junior College and the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing. Lan is attending Cornell University Medical College. Ducky Drake is engaged to Joyce Watter of Essex Fells, N. J. Miss Watter is a graduate of Edgewood Park Junior College.

The middle of January Phyl and I went to Hanover so I could attend a special meeting of secretaries of classes since 1940. Sid Hayward presided at the very inspirational and interesting meetings aimed at helping us understand and do a good job. I have a list of duties a mile long which I can only promise to do my best to accomplish in your behalf. Nick Sandoe and I had a good session discussing class affairs. We have decided on several projects which you will hear about later.
