If you think there's no connection between the current Pyramid Club craze and the '36 news, you're wrong. Since this inspired institution sprang from some fertile West Coast mind, we are certain that our California contingent is in on the gold rush of '49. As for the Atlantic Seaboard—well, take Rich Taylor, for example. We have it from reliable sources that Dodie and Rich struck it rich—to the tune of .... well, we won't talk numbers .... but their dollar investment produced fantastic dividends. Then there's Ruth and Ed Brooks. At this writing, they should be sitting by their fireside listening for the doorbell ring and the pay-off. Their take will be reduced by the inefficiency of some other '36ers (names on request) who just couldn't keep things rolling. And everybody's sorry.
We doff our hat as graciously as we can to Dorothy Guibord for her letter about the Paul Guibords: "After being in Naval Aviation Intelligence overseas for about three years, Paul was appointed General Agent for the Conn. Mutual Life Insurance Cos. here in Rochester (N. Y.). We have two daughters, age 6 and 3, and a new son—born Jan. 6 Paul is City tennis champion and still plays almost as much as he did at Hanover. That has stood him in' good stead for keeping the old waistline down. Bob Paterson is the only other '36er here, but the Dartmouth crowd of Rochester are a lively group, believe me!"
In this business of news reporting, we can't be too scrupulous in our methods of ferreting out chatter. If we read over the shoulder of a friend of a friend of ours, and there's any reference to a guy of three-double three, we'll jot notes in our little green book. And if we know keeper-of-the-coin Morrison has received some class correspondence with social allusions, we'll quote freely. That is how we came by a newsy round-up from Morrie Paine. It contains some thumb-nail sketches by a guy who, in the course of running Waterbury, Conn.'s largest department store, gets to know people. Morrie writes:
"Most of my activities are pretty much interwoven with those of the store Now and again, some Dartmouths wander through .... not many, not often .... but still
"Bob Walker—Christmas before last on way to St. Johnsbury, Vt., to put up his doctor's shingle. Reports since via a patient's friend: he's well liked.
"Seth Thomas—encountered on occasional lunch hour rambles from his Scovill's Production Dept. job. These encounters have developed into several home (his) and apartment (mine) get-togethers which were wonderfully fun. Seth is married to a swell girl.... running a children's dorm (3)... continuing his eager musical versatility .... having fairly recently added a Dog House to his already considerable collection He's really living.
"Brint Schorer—still personally following every Dartmouth football game wherever.
"Bud Wolfe—representing (advisedly used instead of 'selling') Revere, which line we carry in our Housewares Dept. They're afraid to let him really sell so recent visits have been mainly good-willish.
"Ski vacation to Woodstock, Vt., several weeks ago The spot seems to be a mecca for people who have fun on the boards. Saw Bud Titcomb and BobDensmore, both of whom are as hot as any seen on 'Suicide Six'. Neither their condition to take it nor technique has rusted a bit. Me—I'm conservative to the point of being uninteresting ski slope company. Ask Bob, who politely snow plowed part way down Six behind me, then kicked up his heels and beat it on down."
Thanks a lot, Morrie, for taking the time to write.
Some more guys are picking up stakes and moving around—in some cases, to a new city in others, just around the corner: RoyBergengren, now at 414 N. Government St., Gainesville, Fla Lindsey Brigham, at 99 Water Street, Exeter, N. H Sumner Burrows, 3641 Clay St., San Francisco BobIreland, at 76281,4 Hollywood, Los Angeles 46, Calif. And so it goes.
Charley Brooks has been named president of Conant Ball Cos., well-known manufacturers of fine furniture. Charley started with the firm after he graduated .... been with them ever since
Stan McCoy continues to move around for U. S. Rubber. He's now based in the Munsey Bldg., Washington, D. C.
Your correspondent (correctly titled—if more folks would correspond with him) will have left Cond6 Nast Publications in midMarch to join Street & Smith Publications, directing advertising promotion. We're conveniently close to Grand Central Station, and we'd be glad to have you out-of-towners drop in.
That's all for now.
