DARTMOUTH MENLUNCHEON EVERY MONDAY NOONUNIVERSITY CLUB, CHICAGO
The big news is out about membership in the Class of 1953; and while there are some disappointments in these parts among young lads desiring a Dartmouth education and the experience of four years at Hanover, there is also much rejoicing on the part of those who received the "nod" from Al Dickerson's Admissions Office.
Under the direction of Connor B. Shaw Jr. '43, recent Dartmouth varsity basketball center and at present an Industrial Engineer at Marshall Field and Company, a party for the future members of the Class of '53 from this area (who are the cream of Chicagoland's youth), has been arranged at the Winnetka Community House for May 15. Movies of Hanover and other "props" intended to inculcate the Dartmouth spirit will be featured at the Class of '53 affair. Our Prexy, Tige Lyon '25, is also working hard to see that this stellar bunch of boys are not kidnapped by some inferior institution.
On April 19, Bob Coulson '33 was elected Mayor of Waukegan, Illinois, a city of some 30,000 located between Chicago and Milwaukee (also made famous as Jack Benny's home town). Bob ran as a Republican and upset the predictions by rooting out a secondterm Democrat in a normally Democratic community. Prior to his election as Mayor, Bob was an Assistant State's Attorney in which office he gained a national reputation as an authority on the problems of juvenile delinquency.
A recent announcement from the tax firm of McDermott, Will & Emery, specialists in tax matters, discloses that. Lenny Schmitz '3O, has been made a member of the firm, and we offer him our hearty congratulations.
H. C. "Charlie" Becker 45 has been named Recording Secretary of out Association and is preparing to take over the duties of the office of Secretary at the end of the present term.
We ran into Jack Matzinger '36 on the train the other morning and in addition to learning that he is buyer for Carson Pirie's Men's Store, we received a cigar with the announcement that the Matzingers are now disporting Jack Jr., who was born early in April.
The current exhibit at the Chicago Art Institute includes the outstanding works of American Colonial and 18th Century painters. Dartmouth men in these parts are proud to see prominently displayed in the central gallery, the large portrait of John Phillips by Joseph Stewart which was lent by the College for the current exhibit. The exhibit will continue until June 21.
After a full and successful winter season of Dartmouth activities we are resting on our laurels with many of us planning reunions in Hanover in June. We plan to show Dartmouth movies at our Monday luncheon, May 16, and after that we will look forward to our annual Dartmouth outing at the farm of Louie Leverone 'O4 in August.
