Indian Summer hits just as the first, and somewhat disappointing, Dartmouth football score of the 1950 season rolls across CBS, and one's thoughts drift back to those two hot afternoons three (?) years back when we sat in shirtsleeves at Memorial Field to watch the Pennsylvania and Brown thrillers split by our Alma Mammy. I presume many of you did wend your way North to see Dr. Anderson s Crusaders hold a favored Dartmouth team to a tie, and even more of you will watch ensuing games in various cities throughout the East and even Midwest. I guess I may make the Harvard and Yale games and hope t° dig you out of your respective Budweiser bottles long enough to spout out a Wah Hoo Wah and find out why you got married and what you're doing.
Until my path does run across yours at these assembled feetball games, I'm forced to admit that this month's column isn't too full of choice tidbits. So whatcha say.... get off a quickie to me to keep me up to date.
Here in Providence, where I now enter my second month of married bliss (I had to say that), I've run across a few of the boys. Called Jack Kilmartin last nite to urge him to attend this month's Dartmouth Club meeting on Thursday, 'cuz first, he'd meet many of the old gang, and second, he'd hear ex-Dartmouth great and present Brown coach Gus Zitrides talk to the Club. Jack promised he'd be there if possible. Herb Gramstorff made my wedding last month and then left ten days later to report back to Dix where Uncle Sam requested his services. Herb is in the In- active Army Reserve, and that's bad. He wasn't too happy about the whole thing, and who can blame him, cuz he was to enter Tuck II this fall. Another Rhode Islandite to get nailed was Onkel Harv Nolan who was a marine reservist and left yesterday. He's to report to Quantico where Charlie Fay and Matt Fent'on both are in the regulars. Harv threw a swell goin-away blast up in Woonsocket which Pat and I made on the night of the Holy Cross game. We'll all miss Harv's humor in his Class Newsletter, and JohnnyStockwell will have trouble replacing him, but Harv assured me he'd like to pick up the job when he's out of the Gyrenes. He says it's a great way to keep in touch with your buddies and an even better way to get acquainted with those guys you didn't know so well up in the hills.
As already mentioned last month, those close enough to make my wedding were TerryMaphis, Summy Arneson, Art Wallace, HerbGramstorff and Johnny Sweetland with fiancee Joan Hamilton. On our ten-day honeymoon we stopped in Cleveland and dug out WarrenOrnstein. Ornie enters his second year at Michigan Law School this fall and looks great. I caught him up to date on all the old gang he hasn't seen for over two years and we had a swell visit. He's draft bait, as am I, but is just sitting hoping. Once back in school, he'll be "safe" until spring, they keep telling him.
Dave Vogels is another who was in town only a few weeks back and another Uncle Sam has nailed. Dave has now reported to Texas for Army Air Corps work, interrupting his Law career at Harvard. His new address, or the best one to reach him is c/o Morgan Wing Jr., Millbrook, N. Y.
A clipping from a local paper announces that Connie Pensavalle has accepted the position of head coach of athletics at North Attleboro, Mass., High School.
Postcard from Tommy Swartz from Salzburg, Austria, which is one of his stops in a summer in Europe. He also returns to Tuck II this fall. He plans to room with JayUrstadt in Chase Hall.
Got a list of 91 '49ers who graduated with B.A. degrees from* sunny Hanover in June, but won't have room to list them. Guess by now there aren't many left up there.
Saw a clipping in Mademoiselle Magazine, after Art Wallace gave me the scoop, of BillBallard and fiancee Naomi Parker dining at the Rajah in New York. Those two are to be married later this month, the 28th I believe.
On a clipping sent by Publicity of MetroGoldwyn Mayer narrating scenes of the picture Teresa, being shot in Italy, I find the inclusion of Ed Nickerson, who's studying literature in Rome. Apparently the clipping was attached to a photo of Ed with others, but all I got was the clipping. Ed was an infantryman in the 10th Mountain Division during the war in Italy and he fought over the terrain where Teresa is now being filmed. He received the Purple Heart and was decorated with the Silver Star for gallantry in action when he volunteered to make his way back to the U. S. side of the front to get help for his outfit which had been cut ofE behind the German lines and was being pounded by artillery. Hats off to Ed
Recent visitors to the Hanover Inn were John Achorn on August 28, George Hartmann on Aug. 31, and Dick Moulton three times in September.
Bob Rooke is in the training program with Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, and Beane in New York. Address: 70 Pine St.
Anthony Lyons of Flushing, N. Y., was returned to active naval duty August 13. He's an ensign and is to attend a supply school in Bayonne, N. J., for four months. He was the first local Flushing man to be recalled into the reserves.
Gordon "Punchy" Thomas found that when the Coast Guard wouldn't allow his scheduled ship, the Norwegian ship Svalbard, to sail for Europe, he had to solve the transportation problem, so he boarded an airliner and got across that way. Punch was to tour Europe this summer with two other grads, after he graduated with distinction last June. He never was one to be upset by certain obstacles.
Several engagements to announce: JohnnySweetland of Lowell, Mass., to Miss Joan Hamilton of Minneapolis (a Colby Jr. grad) announced in Hanover at graduation time. Bob Rooke of Westfield, N. J., to Miss Natalie L. Davis of Nashua, N. H., with a December wedding planned. Danny Raabin of Brooklyn, N. Y., to Miss Glorianne Elizabeth Goetz of Spokane, Wash. The clipping said that "after a late summer wedding the couple would live in Brooklyn where Mr. Raabin is in business." Bob Kreplin of Northfield, 0., to Miss Suzanne Townsend of Hanover with a fall wedding planned. Lt. John Miller of Montpelier, Vt., to Miss Yolanda Scalzo of Peekskill, N. Y. John was in Dartmouth only one year before he entered West Point, from which he graduated in June. He is to leave soon for overseas.
Among the weddings of the month we find: John M. Borys of Lawrence, Mass., to Miss Eileen E. Brunette of Lawrence. The wedding was performed in June in St. Dennis' Church in Hanover. Donald D. Bursch of White Plains, N. Y., was wed to Miss Elizabeth Anne Wheeler of White Plains in August. Dale G.Jacobson of Pleasantville, N. Y., was wed August 26 to Miss Barbara L. Gennerich of Hartsdale, N. Y. Dale is with the television department of the Columbia Broadcasting System. Another wedding, and a surprise one to me in that I didn't expect it until winter, was that of Doug Parsons of Lexington, Mass., on July 1. I can't quite remember Doug's wife's name, but I'll get it for next month. She's a swell gal. I got the news from PaulErwin in a long letter which also stated that Paul is to enter Temple Law School this fall. He says that Doug's in training with Lees Mfg. Cos. in Virginia. He says that Gene Kelly has an assistant professorship in Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, and that Bob "Jug" Edwards is attending Penn Military College, so that all four (ex-roomies) may be able to get together for the Penn game October 14.
Letter from Art Wallace says that he's already reported for his army draft physical so isn't sure how long he has left. He hopes to attend Bill Ballard's wedding later this month. Art says that he doesn't think Charlie Eaton is with Jones & McLaughlin any more. Art also met two other draftbaits, Paul Woodbury and Dick Andrews. He says Paul is thinking seriously of joining the Air Corps, but Dick is patient and will just wait.
Got a nice engraved Football Schedule Booklet from Rank Lashmet out in RCA Victor Distributing Corp. in Chicago which he apparently sends to his good customers. Thanx a million, Rank.
Guess that's it for this time, gang Help me fill 'er up next month with a letter from each of you. Best until then and see you at the Harvard game?
