The largest and best ever!
That was the consensus of opinion of our annual pre-Harvard dinner in Boston.
Thirty-three members and two guests spent a most interesting and enjoyable evening together at the Algonquin Club the night before Dartmouth scalped Harvard in the Cambridge stadium.
Once again Ned French sponsored the dinner and once again our florist, HarveyWhittemore, pinned a white carnation on our lapels. Three classmates were present for the first time, Johnnie Burtch, Beanie Waring and Warner White, and they all vowed never to miss another one.
After a warming-up session in the lounge and an excellent dinner, Vice-president WaltPowers called the meeting to order. In his inimitable New England manner, Walt called on the officers for their reports and picked out a few of the members to tell all they knew in two minutes flat.
The Treasurer reported that the class was solvent and the accounts in good order, although not audited as yet. Eighty-three members have paid their dues and the 50th Memorial Fund has passed the $11,000 mark but the number of contributors is still very few.
The secretary read messages of regret from Adriance, Bankart, Chellis, Erickson, Gordon,Holmes, Morse and Page.
Art Chapin, editor of the Green Messenger, asked for more items of interest and as chairman of the 45th Reunion Committee advised that we would be hearing from him shortly about the arrangements for June 1952.
Max Hartmann reported on the Alumni Fund, voicing his disappointment that ten classmates who contributed in 1949 failed to send in their checks this year. However the class was most appreciative of his untiring efforts and of the final result, which was $400 greater than the previous year.
Our honorary classmate, Laurence Whittemore, regaled us with a humorous story told in a manner he alone can.
Beanie Waring told of his experience as a stooge for Fat Gilman; Charlie Milham brought us up to the minute news of Hanover, and Nat Leverone welcomed (?) the class of 1905 with humorous anecdotes.
Jim Donnelly responded for the class of 1905. All in all it was a memorable evening and we especially enjoyed the fellowship with the members of 1905.
Present were Burtch, Chapin, Cheney,Clarke, Connell, Cooke, Cromwell and guest, Davis, Denison, Dwyer, Fitts, Frazier, CharlieFrench, Ned French, Gage, Hartmann, Kingsbury, Leverone and guest, Milham, Neal, Nuelle, Powers, Rainie, Redman, Russ, Russell>Joe Smith, Thrall, Waring, Warton, White,Harvey Whittemore and Laurence Whittemore.
On October 3 Joe Nuelle and I had a very enjoyable visit with Dave Main, who was spending a couple of days in New York. Dave was called East on business which couldn't wait until the end of October so he had to pass up the Boston dinner.
