Because the Alumni Fund report takes up so much space, word has been sent to class reporters to restrict the amount of copy. Paragraphs must be pithy and to the point; no redundancy or verbosity.
That word "pithy" reminds me of a gigantic wisecrack once made by Bert Wheeler '11, who located in Chicago. Bert and the wife were eating grapefruit one morning, and Eddie (that's his wife) remarked: "My, this grapefruit is pithy." Bert's snappy commerit was "Yeth." Poor Bert died some years ago, going blind before he went to join his fathers, but he always retained a keen interest in Dartmouth to the end.
Tribute to Harry Floyd
In the necrology section of this MAGAZINE, no doubt, will be an account of the death of our friend and classmate Harry Floyd, but here and now I pay tribute to the guya great soul gone to rest. As freshmen, Harry and I roomed right next door to each other on the first floor of middle Fayerweather, Harry with Izzie Kilburn, and I with Duke Naylor. I never saw the little guy when he wasn't smiling. He kept that up all during his life, smiling his way into the hearts of those with whom he came in contact, and it's my guess that he softened up St. Peter with that smile when he hit the Pearly Gates.
Al Newton, Norm Catharin, Mrs. Phil Chase, and Johnny Shambow '10, all sent me notices about Harry's death, including the piece that appeared in The Echo, the house organ of Filene's where Harry worked for so many years. There was a fine representation of the class at the funeral, Al Newton wrote. Bob Burns, Herb Hawes, NormanCatharin, Bernard Scully, Bert French and Al served as pall bearers. Others present were Dick Lord, Gordon Weinz and Curly Blake.
Harry's death didn't come as a surprise, for his heart had been giving him trouble for some time, especially during the past year, but it's always a shock to lose a good friend. So long, Harry. Knowing you has enriched the lives of your classmates in '09.
A FEW RANDOM NOTES
That Delta Alpha stuff must have hit a responsive chord in a number of the gang, for there have been several letters about same, giving more details which, by the time you receive this, will have been covered in a special issue of Diddings.
Norm (Baldy) Catharin says Curly Blake is living in Brockton, Mass., looks fine for an old man his age.
Bob Stone left Feb. 3 for Florida, to return six weeks later. He's staying with his son-in-law George Collins, who's built a ranch type house in Sarasota.
Got a call from Bull Hadden one day. He was stopping off in Cleveland on his way to Washington. We tied on a noonday feedbag, Bull putting the price on his expensesheet. He's looking good and doing good inhis job as president of McClure, Hadden &Ortman, Management Engineers.
Signing off, men. Keep up your good workof communicating with your class reporter.I wonder what's happened to my Easterncorrespondent, Dick Lord. Are you asleepat the switch, son?
