News this month is more plentiful than space. So without further ado, let's get to it: Stan Calder, who left his junior year to become a Cadet at West Point, was released by the Army in June after a rather lengthy tour of duty in Europe and was quickly snapped up in July by the New York insurance firm of Griswold and Cos. for a clerk position. Son Stan Jr. celebrated his first birthday Jan. 17 last.
Having reported last month on GeorgeBenz, we now have news from his Ripley Hall roommate Bud Chase. This year will mark Bud's second anniversary as an insurance agent in North Attleboro, Mass. for Hardware Mutual. He and Doris are parents of a son Robert Reynolds, now one and one half.
Still with Pan American, Robert Clark is a member of the famed Dartmouth contingent at Levittown, L. I. After assignments in Lisbon, Barcelona, and Brussels, he was named a cargo sales manager for that airline in New York. Daughter Dorothy will be six this month.
Capt. Art Cohen of the U.S. Army Medical Corps is with the 57th Field Hospital in the European theater.
John Cook, of whom we also had news last month, has more recently joined the long list of insurance men in the class by becoming a San Antonio representative of the Volunteer State Life Insurance Cos. of Chattanooga, Tenn.
Mr. and Mrs. Hank Coulter were up from North Haven, Conn, for a brief Hanover holiday around New Year's.
Oak Curtis reports that he is still treasurer and assistant manager of the Portland, Me. furniture manufacturing firm of Thos. P. Beals.
Tony and Kathy Farrell were planning to have an informal '43 get-together Carnival time at their farm out on the Lyme Road, but the Jan. 18 arrival of their first child William Donovan caused it to be postponed until possibly sometime in May. Tony is now a full-time farmer and takes pride in the Holstein-Friesian cows which are bred at his Way land Wood Farm. Among the recent '43 visitors giving his black and white beauties the once over were Stan Lambert, Nelson McClary, George Mitchell, John Reps and BudSilverstein. Incidentally, George is now studying at Teachers' College, Columbia and not teaching as we erroneously reported in December.
The bachelor ranks lost two more men in January. Bud Fuller was married on the 10th to Marye Elizabeth Nelson of Los Angeles in a ceremony performed in the Congregational Church, Hancock, N. H. Bud and Marye are now living in Hancock. And that New York advertising man, John Goode, was wed on the 14th to Frances Lane Hunt in the St. Mary the Virgin Protestant Episcopal Church in Gotham. John's bride is an alumna of St. Lawrence.
There probably isn't any way to get BobGump" Garvie out of the house since he came home with that 16-inch television receiver—the first prize in a sales contest sponsored by his company, the Monsanto Chemical Cos. Incidentally, he and Liz appear to be raising a future Dartmouth fullback. As of eight months, young Bob weighed 26 pounds and was 31 inches tall. What is more, he has had eight teeth since he was six months old.
John Harvey was scheduled to receive his doctor's degree in library science from the University of Chicago Dec. 15. His bachelor's degree in the same field was awarded by the University of Illinois in 1944. Later he worked for two years at the John Crerar Research Library in Chicago and has been studying for his doctor's degree either full or part time for the past two years. From 1944 to 1947 he served as editor of the John Crerar Library Quarterly.
A sales representative for W. J. Holliday 8c Cos., steel suppliers, Rod Lent has left Chicago for Ft. Wayne, Ind.
Formerly a lumberman in Gearhart, Ore., Charles Miller has moved north to Vancouver, Wash., where he is connected with the lumbering firm of Stebco, Inc.
Jim Mullins has also moved north—from Dallas, Texas, to Bloomington, Ind., but we have no information on the reason for the change. Dr. George Rider has left the Kern General Hospital, Bakersfield, Calif, and is now a general practitioner in Tulare, Calif.
Bob Taylor, who has recently studied and taught at Columbia, has decided to get some French culture firsthand and is now a student at Grenoble University. If his report of a change of address is a reliable clue, BobThede is no longer with the Forestry Division in Grayson, Ky. His present mail box is now back in his home town of Cincinnati.
Now residing in Whittier, Calif., JackTroster is a petroleum geologist for Standard Oil of California. During the past year Jack also attended night school at the University of Southern California. He and Marguerite are parents of a daughter Gretchen, born April 15.
Hud Wilson was given his inactive duty status by the Naval Medical Corps last July and he joined the Hackensack, N. J. hospital as a resident surgeon the same month. (Hud had been at the Naval Hospital in Columbia, S. C.) Prior to his naval duty and after receiving his M.D. degree from Cornell, he was an intern at Bellevue in New York City. With the birth of Hudson XV Aug. 15 he and Marilyn now have three boys. The oldest is Donald, now three and one-half, and the third is Bruce, two years old.
And now we'd better cut this short to make way for the names of the '43 contributors to last year's Alumni Fund. An Indian Yell for each of you!
