Here I go into my third year at this game, and let's all hope I've benefited by experience and mistakes so that I'll do a better job for you this next year. I can only ask that you bear with me through my efforts and say, "Well we can at least get rid of him at our BIG FIFTH Reunion"
Naturally a lot of this will be very old by the time it's read, but again please bear with me. I'll try to get in the oldest news in this issue and let the rest hang over until November.
Of primary importance to me during our past summer was the three attempts we made as a Class-Unit to get together and renew acquaintances. These fell in our three biggest localities, Boston, New York and Chicago, with the real workers and organizers being SUMMY ARNESON, JOHNNY ADLER and RANK LASHMET respectively. All three dates were near June 1, and each meeting was held as part of a dinner-blast. I am very sorry to have to report that only one of these was what I consider a success. That was our New York meeting at the Dartmouth Club June 16. The others did not fail because of their organizers. I want to compliment publicly all three of these guys for an attempt well made—that they were not rewarded by decent attendance was certainly not their fault. Where the fault lies, I am just not sure. Perhaps it's me ... but as I told Rank ...
his Chicago meeting did not fail because there was a threat I'd be there, because thefe was no such threat. I did make the New York affair and would have the Boston one but for a recurrence of a Hanover-instilled Mononucleosis bug which flattened me Memorial Day for ten days. Frankly, I'm disappointed as hell that you guys don't show more interest in any kind of class activity. If we're attempting the wrong type of activity, I'd sure appreciate some constructive suggestions on how to improve. We have a class treasury to finance efforts. You elected three officers to push plans .ahead. We have used both the finances and the officers, and we got a total of 32 classmates to three separate meetings in three separate cities. I for one think that's a pretty sad showing. ... However, any chagrin Ido have doesn't mean I want to detract from the loyalty of those 32. I appreciate their attendance, .and I believe if asked they would honestly say they had a helluvah good time. But where does that leave the other 600 guys who are labeled '49ers? This "showing" also doesn't mean we won't continue to try to find the answer. We will try to get up some better "excuse" to get you out, But WHY DO WE NEED AN EXCUSE?
Those at attendance were: Boston, May 26—Summy Arneson, JohnStockwell, Jim Zafris, George Oliver, KingBall, Bert Rodman, Vail Haak, and Bob Swift.
New York, June 16—John Stockwell, me,John Adler, Ort Hicks, Dick Bandfield, JohnMudie, Dana Miller, Russ Palmer, Carl Granger, Bill Ballard, Jay Haft, Ed Clogston, JohnGriffith, Berf Oakley, Dick Commons, SummyPlunkett, Norbie Wild, Glenn Mohrman, andJohn Gately.
Chicago, June 12— Rank Lashmet, BruceBenner, Lynne "Bud" White, Frank Stowell, and Ken Riley.
If there are names on that list that you don't recognize, you have no one to blame but yourself.
Now that I've completed throwing bricks, I'll try to toss a few bouquets. (This is a helluvah way to start off a new year, isn't it?) Johnny Stockzoell has just completed his second year as Class Agent and has made a record each of us should be truly proud of. He pushed us up to second place in the Little Green Derby, and we were nosed out by tenths of a point by the upstart '50's for first prize. John really did a swell job, and he deserves all the credit we can bestow. Unfortunately, he now must take a leave of absence for either one or two years to complete his education by going to the University of Minnesota graduate school of Hospital Administration, and we must replace him until he's again free, but until he's back, our hat's are off to him for a job WELL DONE.
Another bouquet must go to Tom Swartz for his extremely successful roundup of '49ers still in Hanover last May 19 when we all met at the D.O.C. House for a swell luncheon while Stockwell and I were up there to attend the Annual Alumni Officers' Meeting. Tom got the boys out, but good, and we had a great time telling them what to expect in the widewide world. Those present were Dave Vogels (Class Treasurer also in town for meeting), Charlie Holtzman, Sandy Smith, Joe Sullivan,Ray Rasenberger, Ed McAlester, Paul Barnico,Chet Palmer, Jack Ostergaard, Joe Baker, JackMartin, Ort Hicks, Harry Ewing and the two of us. That's a pretty fair turnout for a casual luncheon. Credit goes to Tom. Harry Ewing, incidentally, took some swell color slide-films of the group.
On the more serious side I'm sorry to have to report that two of our lads got hit over in Korea. Fortunately, neither wound was more serious than a temporary jolt (although we admit ANY wound is serious), but Lt. HarvNolan got a piece of shrapnel in his hand while Sgt. Bobby Muenzberg caught a much larger piece when it splintered a leg. The former was sent back into the lines soon after treatment, while Bobby was more fortunate and was sent home. I got a letter in June from him at the Fort Devens Army Hospital.
Now I'll go into the long line of social news as time will allow.

Back in June Bob Barnaby of West Hartford was in town on one of his frequent travels for the Kentile Corporation. Bob's a district salesman for them. He also is the proud papa of three sons and wants to know if there is any other '49er with three of the same gender???
To cheer Harvey Nolan up while he was recovering from the shrapnel-wound his wife Jane presented him with a son, Charles Walter Nolan, on June 10. As to my knowledge, Harv has not yet been shipped home, but I hope and suspect he's due home soon. That's it for this month. I've completely bypassed a lengthy list of guys who announced summer engagements and also all the guys who've written me swell letters in the past few months, but I'll get to them all next time when my space isn't quite so crowded. By the time you read this it'll be time for the Big Green football team to hit the field. Where will I see you this year??? Boston, New Haven, New York, Princeton, Hanover??????
