The annual Christmas luncheon took place at Bel Air West on December 29. We had a fine attendance consisting of applicants for next year's freshman class and their fathers, undergraduates, and alumni. As always at these affairs, the emphasis was on current activities and developments at Hanover. Tom Curtis '32, a member of the Board of Trustees, discussed the situation at the governing level. The primary aim continues to be to secure and maintain a faculty second to none. If that is done, and we were assured that it is being done, then all the other features of an outstanding academic enterprise fall into line.
The undergraduates also had their say. Andy Curtis '66 extolled the virtues of the Great Issues Course. The coat and tie requirement for the sessions adds to its uniqueness. Keith Hazelwood '67 talked about social activities at the College. Fraternities continue to play an important part in this area, he said, and seem to be getting stronger. Phil Freedman '68 discussed academic matters. According to Phil, the policy of the trustees regarding a top flight faculty is very effective in operation, and the students are assured of outstanding instructors, along with the finest physical plant. EdSpiegel Jr. '69 spoke of the plight of the beginners. Freshman Week is a fine thing, he says, but some guys don't take it overly seriously; some even fail to attend the lectures! Studies are a different matter, and require hard work.
Frank Curtis '36 performed excellently as head of the head table. Jim Burke '59 did a fine job in organizing the occasion. The individual speakers all did exceedingly well. But most of all we enjoyed having so many alumni on hand. Individuals play the most important part merely by being in attendance; and we hope to see more and more, continuously, all the time. Especially we would like to have a 100% attendance on the occasion of President Dickey's visit here in March.
