The Worcester Gazette recently published a letter of tribute concerning Les Chase, who was killed in Korea on November 29 while serving as a Captain with the Marines. This tribute by a corporal who served under him is such a fine and unusual one that we want to share it with the class:
"I am writing this letter from Korea in tribute to a great man, Capt. Lester T. Chase, formerly of Southbridge, who was commanding officer of the Marine company with which I have been serving. I served under him from the time we left Union Station for training camp and then across to California and finally to Korea.
"Captain Chase was a man who was deeply concerned with everything that went on about him, especially with the troubles of wounded men. There were times when he faced danger to see that his men were safe. He knew how to give orders clearly. He was cautiously wise with all decisions and his men worshipped him. He was killed while en route with mail for .his men. Chinese Communists got him in early December.
"I am a Shrewsbury boy and I write this letter in honor of our beloved captain, one of the greatest men I have ever known. The men serving under him are bowed in grief and say unanimously, 'God rest his noble soul.' " CPL. NEIL E. GONYA
