Last fall the Big Green soccer team tied with Yale for the New England championship and Tom Dent was named soccer coach of the year. This fall with a record of two wins and two defeats, prospects are not so bright and Tom is still juggling his line-up and experimenting in hopes of finding a winning combination. The Dentmen got away to a good start by defeating Massachusetts University 2-1 in Hanover on Sept. 26 and then defeating Amherst 3-1 the following week. More recently, however, they've run into difficulty, losing to Army, 5-1, and to Williams, 2-1.
Defensively strong, the Indians lack at this moment the necessary scoring power and the forward line appears spotty at the best. In the Williams encounter, for example, the Big Green had possession of the ball for most of the game but time and again missed valuable scoring opportunities.
The current Big Green line-up has Don Swanson at goal, Dick Roberts and Captain Jack Hall at the fullback posts, Dave Conlan at right halfback, John Rice at center half, Tom Dixon at left half, Gus Hullman at outside right, Bob Addis at inside right, Jim Pradilla at center forward, Bob Drawbaugh at inside left and Frank Garcia or Chet Caswell at outside left.
In a rough game at West Point Dick Roberts, John Rice and Bob Addis were all injured and Roberts and Addis had to miss the Williams encounter, but are expected to return shortly to action.
"At the moment," Coach Dent reports, "I have only about five men on the team who can be counted on. The rest are improving, but still make mistakes and are green." As far as the rest of the schedule is concerned he expects the team to do fairly well, now that the toughest games, are behind with possibly one exception.
