That dull red flush you may detect showing through this copy is not the result of old-age vision difficulties or even further material from the Daily Worker. It's rather a reflection from the fat Irish puss of the character who each month tries to string together enough words to hold the franchise in this corner. Last month, ye sec had hardly got the cover back on the typewriter, tapped the kid's piggy bank for stamp money, and neutralized the atrocious tang of that fish glue C. Widmayer puts on the flaps of his envelopes with a little Kentucky Tavern, when mailmen began to stagger up the front steps to rid themselves of fat envelopes forwarded from /. Gilbert after he had efficiently removed the loot which interested him. Before the, as always, delicate and subtle requests for a little news had hit the printer's desk, ye sec was up to his whatsis in beautifully decorated note paper. For which we are duly grateful, albeit being as how all this happened before the strange oasis of New Haven, much of the decoration concerned the state of the fortunes of what one caustic commentator referred to as the "Pea Green." Leave us put aside such sorry matters, however, and see what we might feel happy about.
For instance, our MEN OF DISTINCTION for the month.... In a short news clipping we find that Bethlehem Steel Co. announced in September that Robert E. Wilmot had been appointed manager of structural sales for that company.. .. Likewise in September, Dr. EdMarceau, of Burlington, Vt., was awarded a fellowship in the International College of Dentists.... From the city of the angels, we find that Tom Cass is now vice president in the California Container Corporation division of the Container Corporation of America ... and under dateline of "With the 7th Inf. Div. in Korea," Lt. Col. John W. Lynch was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in Korea.
And in the all-is-not-lost department of VITAL STATISTICS To the FrankWardwells, on July 2, was born a son, Frank P. Jr.... From Coconut Grove, Fla., CharlieKehoe, with some disregard for the accuracy of our records announces the birth of a daughter Kathleen "eleven months ago," making a total of one son and three daughters... and for a M.C.S. from Tuck School, Al Seitner from Jacksonville, Fla., makes the amazing statistically inaccurate statement that daughter Barbara Joy "recently" joined her brothers, Monroe and Allen.
HANOVER VISITORS in October, lucky people, they.. . . Mr. and Mrs. Frederick RathJr. from Alexandria, Va., and Dr. and Mrs. C.L. Holt from Falmouth, Maine.
And speaking of Hanover, just 20 years ago this time . . . the Athletic Council awarded Ds in soccer to Allabough, Brabbee, Shea, Watts and Werner; in football to Bennett, Embry, Fishman, Frankel, Glazer, Hedges, Hulsart, Lapidus, Michelet, Morton, Powers, Stangle, Silverman, Sweeney and Wells; and in cross country to Lepreau.. .. The Players presented The Tavern, with Alan Hewitt as the innkeeper supported by C. G. Cogswell, Betty McWhood (not '34), and R. B. Terhune ... the Claremont-Windsor road claimed its third fatality of the year.... Jacko featured an open letter to Bill Cunningham from W. H.Scherman Kentucky distillers announced they were ready to produce fifty million gallons of burbon in 1934.... W. P. Stowe won the football skills contest on a campus that had to be cleared of snow, the contest testing skill in punting, passing and drop kicking.... Pi Lam won the college touch football championship with Golding, Levine and Menchel starring Cannell resigned, and the Press Club was trying to put hemlock in Colonel Thompson's beer for unethical conduct in writing about it... . DOC announced a logging bee with Roberts as Walking Boss, Twiss, Bull Cook, and S. B. Dunn, Cookee... . Hanover voted to replace Ledyard Bridge which had weathered "floods and Dartmouth men" since 1859 .. . the Barbary Coast with Rigby, Gilbert, Abercrombie, Gay and Ford were to go to Puerto Rico during the holidays ... and the Campus Cafe announced venison steak and venison chops from a deer personally rendered deceased by George, with each serving accompanied by a stirring, firstperson account of the titanic struggle between man and beast.
Jim Wendell, with his co-workers doing a very neat job of getting things lined up for the five-year push towards the 25-year Memorial Fund, which even now has a respectable start, asks for a plug directed towards those in the high tax brackets who might want now to make their contribution when it would cost the least.
Which reminds us to explain that next year, although twenty years removed from 1934, is not reunion year. That comes in 1955, in accordance with the new schedule which we would like very much to explain here except that we first have an engagement to split an atom.
Other NAMES IN THE NEWS FrankL. Sweetser Jr., Ph.D., associate professor of sociology at Boston University, specializing in the field of population growth and community development, has been retained by the Manchester, Mass., School Planning Board as consultant on methods of forecasting school population. ... And from the New YorkHerald Tribune (praise be) we find that OrvDryfoos has been elected to the board of directors of Goodwill Industries of New York, a welfare organization for the handicapped. Still blissfully running our fingers through unspent notes, it's obvious we're not going to get far, but let's try a few bits of information which may get a little stale if held.. .. StanNeil, for instance, took in the Holy Cross game and spent the evening with Chuck Rolfe and a couple of youngsters from '35, Bill Adams and Bob Roundy. Also met Calloway at the Cape during the summer but didn't get a chance to beat him at golf. ... Ted Germann has finished his course at the Infantry School and is taking off for Indo-China for duty with the Military Assistance Advisory Group in Saigon, after spending some time with his wife and family in France. But comes now the time to pull up short and we wish we had to pull up shorter. Once each year the MAGAZINE lists, row on row, those who stood up to be counted when needed, so we pause now to present this month our 402 MEN OF DISTINCTION:
