The Big Green opened the 1958 home season with a satisfactory but unimpressive 20-0 win over Lafayette, before some 5,000 hardy spectators on a damp and windy Saturday. For a while in the first half it looked as if the Leopards might repeat their upset victory of 1955, as Dartmouth's offense sputtered and fumbled and only some fine punting by quarterback Bill Gundy kept the Big Green out of trouble.

Midway in the second period Dartmouth came alive when a punt by Gundy pinned Lafayette near their own goal line. The visitors had to punt back, giving the Indians the ball in Lafayette territory. With the second team in, quarterback Seth Moger and halfback Al Rozycki proceeded to march downfield with Rozycki carrying on six of the nine plays, and then taking a pass from Moger for thirteen yards and a TD. Dartmouth's second score also came on a pass in the third period when Gundy tossed to end Bill Hibbs after halfback Jake Crouthamel had turned in several good gains to put the Indians in scoring position. The third and final score came in the fourth period when guard Bob Boye intercepted a pass and ran it back to Lafayette's 23-yard line. Six ground plays later halfback Jim Burke crashed over from the three to score and Captain Al Krutsch's conversion kick was good.

Marring the victory was the loss of tackle Bill Pettway for the season. Pettway, Captain Al Krutsch and tackle Dave Bathrick were standouts in the line, but the general consensus after the game was that the Big Green still had a ways to go.
