Danny Waugh's entry in the 'Grandchild Derby' is pressing hard. One of the "two more promised for 1953" arrived on January 30. The other is "still promised!" So - the race tightens. Going into the back stretch, it's Milwaukee leading with 8; Waugh close up with 7; the field far in the rear although further reports could change it. Giddy-ap, boys lets go!
Bob Frothingham makes the headlines! At the American Management Association's Marketing Conference, held February 9-11 at New York's Hotel Statler, Bob, in his capacity of Ass't. Gen. Mgr., Foreign Trade Dept., Socony-Vacuum Oil Co., was one of a panel to explore the increased responsibility of sales management, declaring in his talk that "sales objectives and budgets should be developed by the chief sales executive of a company, and not by accountants who are not responsible for, or able to assure, attainments of these objectives." Bob was just back from a flying trip to Europe where he attended regional management meetings in Paris and Rome. While in Paris, he had the pleasure of hobnobbing with a couple other Dartmouth men - his sons, Bob III '41 and Tony '44. Bob III is with General Motors, France, and Tony with Eastman Kodak's French company. Quite a treat for the old man - says Bob Senior!
Thornton Pray was among those present at the Dartmouth Alumni Association Dinner in Philadelphia on January 29.
Jack Mason tangled with an obstreperous flu-bug while buttoning up the purchase of a cotton mill for his company down in. Selma, N. C., and had to retire to a local hospital for reconditioning. At last reports, he had the bug licked and had taken himself to a warm climate somewhere for a much needed vacation. By the time these Notes appear, I imagine he'll be back in his old haunts again.
"Squatters Rights" is the title of this one! Dick Wyman lays claim to some 42,000 square feet of land on the Worcester turnpike in Natick by reason of having discovered that no owner has been listed for it for the past 100 years. This came to light when a map accompanying Dick's deed to 13 acres in the area doesn't include the disputed strip. Very evidently a case of "keeping your eye on the ball!" Dick is quite enthusiastic about his Rose Gardens in Virginia - has been raising 'em for about three years now and will start shipping 'em to market soon for the clean-up. Dick was headed for Florida to visit his mother and due back to the roses some time in March.
Chan Foster is back eating popcorn again - after a dental excavation!
Art Nichols, commenting on the 'Grandchild Derby,' says: "With three grandchildren, I can't compete on quantity, but I'll take on any and all comers on quality!" Nick had an air letter from Johnnie Johnson in Brisbane. A liberal translation of it reveals some interesting items: - he's on the S. S. Taiping, white officers, Chinese crew ship is spotless as a private yacht good food, small passenger list, nice people,- had lunch at American Club with C. A. Vander Pyl '13, whose daughter is in Sydney, had dinner with HuskyDemerritt and wife in Honolulu they reported Bill Hall was no longer there, reports sparkling Burgundy quite cheap - is picking up odds and ends of gifts but hasn't found any post cards yet for Eben Clough hopes to make 5. 5. Pres. Polk out of Japan, on theory that withdrawal of 7th Fleet may discourage some of present reservation holders - expects to be back in New York about middle of April - sends best to all the gang. Oh, these globe trotters!
The First Congregational Church of Columbus, 0., is celebrating the tenth anniversary of Dick Merrill's first sermon as their pastor and publishes in the First Church News a glowing tribute to him under the heading "A Decade with Dr. Merrill." I would like to quote the final paragraph of this article:
"Upon this anniversary, many of us are remembering Dr. Merrill's quiet strength in time of emergency, his warmth and depth of understanding that lightens sorrow and heightens joy. We all unite in gratitude for his spiritual ministry in time of war and postwar responsibilities and rejoice that his wisdom, courage, and eloquence will continue to add to the stature and usefulness of this historic church." A full transcript of the article is in the 1915 records.
Strange doings in Connecticut! Reports are somewhat garbled, but echoes reaching New York indicate that the Gishes' phone bill took an unseasonable jump (unseasonable hour, that is!) around pre-dawn of a certain February weekend holiday. It has been established that during said weekend Helen was up at Franconia Notch enjoying the wintry charms of that popular spot. It was further established that Carl, aided and abetted by one Collin Wells '13, was "holding the fort" in Westport, whence emanated, via Bell telephone, the above-mentioned echoes. The banjo obligato in the background could only be ascribed to said Collin Wells!
Mr. and Mrs. Chan Harwood announce the marriage of their daughter Virginia to Judson Howard Nelson on March 14 in South Congregational Church, Middletown, Conn.
We. thought this only occurred in story books! On a $1.00 "March of Dimes" ticket, Hal Rich won a 55500 Chrysler 1953 NewportNew York motor car! Hal writes: "The car drives like a dream —and I'm still in one!" On top of this, Hal was made Director of Coast Guard motion pictures, effective January 1953. Give us the receipe, will you, Hal?
Art Tower, who has been plant physician for New Departure Division of General Motors in Meriden, Conn., retired the first of the year to devote his full time to private practice of pediatrics. Art was second among all General Motors' physicians in point of service and is well known to thousands in Meriden, who have experienced the benefits of his medical knowledge. His long span of service played a leading role in the development of the plant's present day medical program. Aside from those as an industrial physician, Art's activities have also been many in the local medical scene, having been pediatricianin-chief at the Meriden Hospital for some 25 years. His son, Dr. John Tower, is assistant resident in pediatrics at New Haven Hospital where the latter's wife is also serving as assistant resident in internal medicine. Connecticut's medical affairs would appear to be in good hands!
Further registrations at Hanover Inn reveal that Johnny Mullin and Russ Rice took advantage of Hanover's sparkling climate and winter activities.
Jim Mowry of Hartesville, S. C., checked in at that Mecca for Dartmouth men on East 39th Street while in New York on some textile business.
Jack and Madelaine Bowler were scheduled to spend the month of March in Bermuda to give Jack a chance to fully recuperate from his recent illness. Balmy breezes and blue skies should do it - eh, Jack?
The Deep Rock Oil Company has established an area land and exploration office in Bismarck, N. D. - one more spot for their vice president, Jack Ferguson, to add to his extensive itinerary!
Ed Shea is another who "gets around." As Supervisor of Accounts for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., Ed audits their offices in all cities - which takes him around quite a bit, particularly in New England. A recent swing through Maine included Waterville, Lewiston and Calais. Ed says he'll look up Johnny Bach-Wiig when he gets to Augusta. Ed reports that his wife is slowly regaining her strength after a recent operation. As for himself: "I manage to keep going, although all inclines seem steeper than a few years ago." Ain't it the truth, Ed!
The marvels of "fishing through the ice" as revealed by the exploits of Eben Clough and Kike Richardson will have to wait another issue.
EXTRA! Hold everything! A belated entry takes the lead in the "Grandchild Derby!" Russ Durgin comes in with: "You and the other fellows may be interested in knowing that the Durgins now have nine grandchildren - with a tenth expected almost daily." So - at the far turn, it's Durgin leading with 9; Milwaukee a close second with 8; and Waugh closing rapidly with 7. Hang onto your hats it looks like a photo-finish!
Incidentally, Russ was reported seriously ill some time back with a recurrence of the malady that brought him home from Japan. Are we ever glad to report that Russ is home again from his hospital siege with everything under control!
