Dartmouth's Rowing Club crews are doing unusually well this spring. The varsity heavyweights opened with a win over Brown by half a length and the freshmen also won over the Bruins. The 150-pound crews swept all four races at Derby to gain possession of the Durand Trophy. At the same time the third varsity 150-pound crew defeated Yale and Brown at Providence, while the freshman heavies lost first-team and second-team races to Harvard in a race at Hanover.
In the Compton Cup Races the varsity heavyweight first boat finished third, the Jayvees came in second in their race, and the freshmen finished third. In the 150-pound competition for the Biglin Bowl against Harvard and the Indians placed second behind Harvard in four of five races.
In the Packard Cup Races against Syracuse and Boston University, the Dartmouth varsity and freshman heavyweight crews placed second to Syracuse and the Jayvee crew won. These races were held in Hanover during Green Key weekend.
At Annapolis, on the same weekend, the varsity 150-pound crew placed second to the Detroit Boat Club but edged Navy. Navy won the freshman and JV races.
In the most recent meet, the E.A.R.C. sprint championships at Princeton, the Big Green varsity heavyweight crew failed to qualify, but the 150-pound varsity finished a close second to Princeton, the best finish recorded by Dartmouth since 1955. None of the JV or freshman crews were among the top finishers in their divisions.
The major meet for Dartmouth, of course, is the I.R.A. Championships being held at Syracuse, New York on June 20. Dartmouth will be competing against major crews from the East plus Stanford, Washington and Wisconsin. Tickets for this annual event may be obtained by writing to the D.C.A.C., or through S.R.A. Headquarters at Syracuse University.
Dartmouth's fine Rugby team is also doing well as it defeated Harvard 9-3 and then stopped Princeton by 11-3 and 9-0 scores to win the Eastern Rugby Union Championship. Later the first team defeated a Province of Quebec All-Star aggregation by a 5-3 score and this, coupled with a 3-3 tie by Westmount (a Montreal team), gave the Indians possession of the Carling Cup, symbolic of the Eastern North-American, title.
New officers elected this past month by the Club include Roli Kolman as captain, Art Cockburn as secretary, Dana Johnson as treasurer, Denny Goodman as assistant captain, and John Edwards as publicity director. The new slate will serve until next May.
The Dartmouth Sailing Club finished its season by placing third behind Toronto and Bowdoin in the Phelps Trophy Race held at Lake Mascoma over the Green Key weekend. They also finished third at the New England Dinghy Championships held at the Coast Guard Academy in late April. M.I.T. and Yale were first and second in this meet with seven teams competing.
