Anxiety pushes this old typewriter on the eve of a return to Hanover. Alumni Officers weekend was May 8-9 and I'll have on the spot data next writing.
You know, once a Newsletter writer always a loyal reporter. Reference here to Bob Hunt who gives the Travellers Insurance Co. in Hartford his executive talents by day, gets his law degree at night and will be a dad again in October. Bob reports welcome news of that "radio sports voice of Hanover," in our time, Shady Bob Shade. Shady Bob has reversed his field and is a hopping success for the Travellers via the Bennett and Shade Co., in Decatur ll. Bob did long research and larger sales calls to finally emerge a top salesman of Blanket Bonds for public officials. He has uncovered a lucrative field where the need for this protection is great. Fine work. Bob. In Bob Hunt's travels he visited Joe and JanePoole. Joe (Maynard W.) is recently out of round two with the Navy and Korea, a little heftier and perhaps two strands of hair less topside. The Pooles are in Philadelphia, where Toe is in the residential construction business; those homes need LUMITE windowscreening, contact me for prices. They have a Jr., Chipper, who is about to go to school this fall. A reunion seemed under way down in the friendly city when Bob Bensing and his wife and new daughter came by for a "foam." Bob Bensing (all Bob this month) is just into Philly from Chicago, back to the home office of Bensing Bros. & Dceney - manufacturers of commercial printing inks. The Hunts plan a little fishing down East in Maine this summer with Roy and Do Jerman; nice duty, Bob. Incidentally you route 10 drivers, the Hunts are in Avon right on the highway waiting to see you on your summer trips to Hanover. A letter from Walt Snickenberger in Ithaca, N. Y., where he ably assists Cornell s President Malott, tells of regular gatherings with old Greens, no '46s but Dave Weld's brother-inlaw is on the faculty so Walt keeps a fine finger on the pulse and sees Dartmouth from the other side of Pico Peak. Mary and Walt have two young tigers (Walt and Tommy) whom we want to see Hanover-bound, so keep that Cornell influence to a minimum.
That ever-working guy Growler Whitman has 1946 in top shape in the Alumni Fund race. Keep the pace; send your gift in easy payments if you prefer, but let's not lose this good chance to be the best this year. Jack also reports a fine turnout at the Boston Alumni dinner: Bob Donald, Ralph Hersey, Al Lutz,George Riley, Bill Riley, Dan Ruggles, LarryBerry, Jack Grady, Bob Kimball, Mac McKenzie, Bill Wallis and Don Furber.
My very astute informants from other unmentionable classes tell of Bob Albrecht's excellent position with W. T. Grant. Bob is now Merchandising and Packaging Manager for the big orange chain. Nice going, Robert. And also spotted was Dale Armstrong doing business in Albany and Schenectady, N. Y., with G.E. Dale has the big New York territory for U.S. Steel. He and Gloria are living in Yonkers, N. Y. Joe Donahue passed his Massachusetts Bar exams and appears headed for marriage and a law practice in Dallas, Tex. Don McNally has returned to New York and is now with the Continental Casualty Cos. as executive special agent. Don was with Seaboard Surety in New York and recently Chicago. We'll be looking for you and Jackie, Don. The National Bank of Geneva, N. Y., has elected Jim Wyckoff to Assistant Cashier. The Yales have been wearing us down football wise, and the final stroke is that Art Young has joined Jordan Oliver as freshman line coach. Congratulations, Art, but don't give those "Blues" all the enthusiasm; we want you back in Hanover.
Don Behnken and Anita Villa of Zurich, Switzerland and Garden City, L. I., were recently engaged. Anita is an alumna of Wheaton and is associated with W. & J. Sloane, N. Y. Don is now with DuPont at Parlin, N..J. September is the wedding month. Sam Johnson and Suzanne Towns were married April 11 in St. Thomas Church, N.Y.C. Sam is with the McBee Cos. in Buffalo where he and Suzanne will make their nest. That old set shot artist for the '46 frosh squad, AlHolmes, is taking the big step. He and Ann Wiebenson announced their engagement in March. Ann is from Cleveland. Al's out there in business, but no further information is at present available.
It's a girl for Gene and Gail Bokor. Jill Faye Bokor arrived March 26. Wonderful news, Gene. You know it's been over a year since you and Gail and I had a quick chat on 56th Street; where have you been hiding?
Here's a guy last heard of in Canada, the old roommate Dr. Ed Attix. Ed is on the staff of Emmanuel Hospital, Oregon. I still remember those green Dartmouth I shirts you sewed to your skin for our freshman winter Let's hear from you. Frank Ettari and family are outgrowing their apartment. Coal business is really hot. Looks like a move to a house.
BAKER LIBRARY, 3:30 P.M., MAY 10 Warm sun welcomed the alumni officers back for that weekend in Hanover to conduct class business. The College outdid herself to re-campus" us and 1946 was represented. BobKimball, with Jackie and a healthy financial report, addressed the entire Treasurers' meeting, making even the "oughty-ought" boys take notice. Jack Whitman and Jean made calls on 12 '46s for Alumni Fund gifts on the way up Route 3 from Boston. Jack's got us in good position - let's not let him down. Georgeand Mildred Hopkins were back representing the Springfield (Mass.) Club where our boy George is secretary. Tom Charles gave the Wilmington (Del.) Club thumping representation.
It was a strong '46 turnout and things are shaping up for us, the unwieldy 900, for Dartmouth. The ever-present problem of class unity for the younger, large classes was tackled; new ideas and results will be coming your way. The net of this problem for us is -find a '46, have a beer or a meeting, attract more in your area and let John Rankin or this column know of the doings. We're going to return to Hanover for the most TERRIFIC TENTH the College will ever absorb.
This is close-out for the year. Don't forget the Alumni Fund and live a little this summer.
