Jack Whitman opened the Alumni Drive with a fine flourish. Jack's plans look confidently ambitious. His idea is to get a realistic gift from us and not lose that terrific participation we've built up. Sure we are hit from all angles every day for contributions, but this is no contribution. This is life blood for Dartmouth. It's nice to know that money we send as.sures this "one of its kind" institution a free hand and a sanctuary for us when we want to refresh our outlook on life.
John Rankin's first Tomahawk hit readers this past month. With a sharp edge on humor, it will be welcome mail. John, congratulations to you and Greta on your new little gal, Holly. "Eager Girls Get List of Year's Marked Men," so runs a headline in the Decatur (111.) Her-ald-Review and Bob Shade's name is among those present for the leaping year grab. Bob is with his Dad's firm of Bennett and Shade and is also chairman of the March of Dimes speakers bureau. A few of our number are really proving themselves as accomplishing citizens. Bruce Durkee is running for School Committeeman in Swampscott, Mass. Bruce dug into the hard facts and found wasteful programs existing in the present school system. He's got the facts, the force and the ability. Here's to better schools for Swampscott, Bruce. And Wally Baker out in Cleveland is conducting a vigorous campaign for Republican nomination for State Representative in Cuyahoga County. His platform is for a more workable conservation program, better care for the mentally ill and methods to decrease juvenile delinquency. Wally assisted in the recent prosecution and conviction of former Sheriff Stuart Harland of Geauga County.
Here's a glittering Kodachrome card from Dave and Jean Weld sunning and enjoying Del Ray Beach, Fla. A "Wee Weld" is due in August. Looks like no Chebeague trips this year, Tiger. Max Pryor is producing a child a year on October 6, in 1950, and again in 1951. He and Pat are in Mundelein, 111., where he is an advertising space salesman for Curtis Publications. Those two "Wilmington Whales" Phil Stedfast and Jack Howard report enjoyment of this effort and of course that's nice to hear. Steve Olko has had some interesting work these past few years. He visited Kitimat, British Columbia, where he was in charge of a soil boring and testing program. He worked on a Blast Furnace Foundation in Cleveland, O. Now he is a soils engineer with F. R. Harris Inc., Consulting Engineers, New York. Steve's home is in Manhasset. It's hard to hold a good man down. Gus Gillaugh has added to his many accomplishments the title of Agency Manager for the New England Mutual Life Insurance Company in Dayton, O. About a month ago Bob Leslie had a tremendous party for a large group of mostly from older classes. Bob's new home took a good whiskey floor refinishing that night. Bob and Betty are expecting their second baby in June. Curly Hamilton is a Medcial Student at Albany Medical College. ScribJelliffe is with the Chase National Bank in Stuttgart, Germany, an international financier. Don Mason is covering wicked Washington for the Ruberoid Cos. and living in Hyattsville, Md. Dick Nelson is an Engineer with Winston Brothers out on the West Coast at Monrovia, Calif. And it's inspiring to learn of Dick Unser's new position as field executive for the Boy Scouts of America. The great number of young boys coming along from our huge birthrate points up the prime need for decent guidance. With meat prices sky high, I'd say Ralph E. Smith, as credit manager for Swift and Cos., is in an enviable position. You know, what's a little beef on the cuff these days? Ralph is in Clackamas, Ore. At first glance your writer thought Paul Malinowsky was aboard the S.S. Kresge at Port Richmond, Staten Island, N. Y. When considered in a clearer light it reads that Paul, long with the S. S. Kresge variety store chain, is now managing this store after his fine work for their outlet in White Plains, N. Y.
Weddings and Those About To Be Up in Skaneateles, N. Y., Ann Crosraan and Jack Witte were married on March 29. Among Jack's ushers were Tim Hewlett and MattGately. After a trip to Bermuda, Ann and Jack will live in Newport, R. 1., where the groom is a Lieutenant at the Navy Supply Depot. Ann is a Wells College graduate and until her marriage was an instructor on the staff of the fabulous Toledo Museum of Art. Al Rigby and Jane Zern were married last February 24 in Nutley, N. J. Jane's a graduate of the Conover School o£ Modeling and Al is a junior executive with the National City Bank, N. Y. They had a wedding trip to Quebec and now live in Richmond Hill, L. I. Jolly old England in the village of Aldbourne was the scene ©f Chan Bowen's wedding to Jean Marie Auld of Youngstown, O. Chan's a Lieutenant with the sth Hospital Group and Jean went over on the Queen Mary for the ceremony. A few days in Paris and a week of skiing in the Bavarian Alps made it a perfect continental event. Holden Farrar, the best man, is also a Lieutenant in Chan's group. From Albany, N. Y., comes nice news that Mary Gray has announced her engagement to Bill Rosenfeld. Mary is an alumna of Middlebury College and Bill is with National Bellas Hess New York Corporation.
