Having just finished clearing away the ashes following the New Year conflagration, we'll let the haze settle and see if the '48 mailbag has anything of interest to report. It appears that the old bag isn't exactly overflowing with news, but we'll set down what is available. By the way, don't you wives and gal friends fail to send me the dope about your '48 hubbies and beaux. You're a fine source of information, and I really appreciate hearing from you.

No new marriages or engagements are reported, but Dave and Ellen Miller have had the first addition to their family - a baby girl, Wendy, born November 22 in Portland, Ore. Congratulations, Millers! Dave is in the midst of his internship in a Portland hospital, and apparently finds the Northwest to his liking.

Bob Douglas, purchasing agent in a Gulf refinery in Philadelphia, had quite a bit to report when I recently saw him here in Pittsburgh. He and Ginny get together with Boband Ann Bryan occasionally for a meal or evening. Doug mentioned, too, that at the Princeton game he ran into such stalwarts as Jim Schaefer, George Michalek, JohnnyHatheway, Bob Reynolds, John Van Raalte, and Barney Hoisington. These '48s, actively appreciative of the showing being made by the Big Green on the field below, were taking advantage of a rare opportunity for celebration. Barney and Barb Hoisington make their home in the town of Princeton where Barney is in an investment brokerage firm - showing the Tiger the way. He's also president of the Princeton chapter of the United World Federalists.

My apologies to "Shoepolish John" Lanzetta for my having failed to mention that I saw him back in Hanover over the Cornell weekend. Lanzett's living near Albany, is still a bachelor - though perhaps somewhat reluctantly - and helps to keep his father's construction outfit going in the right direction.

Thanks to Os Skinner '28 tor news of TomMorris' active civic life. Tom is chairman of the 1954 Fund Drive of the Bradford County Red Cross Chapter in Pennsylvania, as well as a trustee of the Troy Presbyterian Church and supt. of its Sunday school. He earns his bread as secretary-treasurer of the Troy Dairy Farms. In addition, he and Dixie, his wife, have a year-old daughter. Well done, Tom!

Congratulations, too, to Nat Merrill. He and his spouse are now in Germany where Nat is studying opera under a Reynolds Fellowship from Dartmouth. He writes that, "It is all pretty wonderful, the only drawback being that we will probably miss reunion in June." I believe the address is Hamburg.

Here's some really old stuff which I hope isn't so far out of date as to be uninteresting. A large photo in a Manchester Union Leader issue of last April shows Eddie Ouellete, president of the New Hampshire Junior Chamber of Commerce, presenting its charter to the fourth Jaycee chapter in the state, that of Gorham. Ed is a pretty active figure in Granite State civic activities, and spends much time going back and forth between Concord and his home in Berlin. Another active '48 is KeithKlane. In late March he joined his father and became a partner in a large, modern shoe store in Malden, Mass. Classmates can drop around to see Keith on the premises at 61 Pleasant St. - and find some good footwear in the process, if needed. A substantial promotion came to Maury Witherspoon in April when he was appointed sales manager of the Bon Air, a prominent hotel in Augusta, Ga. Have you run into any well-known figures on the Augusta links lately, Maury?

Ed Gingrich is definitely upholding Dartmouth's good name in the South. Word from Hanover states that Ed is very active in Big Green activities in the Atlanta area, and is helping to make the community Dartmouthconscious. He's selling for the Minnesota Mining & Mfg. Co. Another sales rep is Miles"Bill" Richardson, who dispenses Carter ink of all colors in the Syracuse area. Sam Wilkinson is serving Uncle Sam as a Navy It. (jg) on the USS Furse out of New York. Another '48 actively carrying the colors is Capt. DaveKarukin, serving with the 5th Marines of the Ist Marine Division somewhere in the Pacific area. A new address that recently came into my hands is that of John Abrahamson. Abe has transferred from N.Y.C. and is now located in Overland Park, Kansas.

That seems to deplete the sack for this month. I'll be grateful to those of you who will help fill it before next month's columnwriting time rolls around - and that goes for you gals, too. Happy New Year!
