Our first big meeting of the winter season was held on November 18 in the Kyosai Kaikan Club in Tokyo. We had no chance for a meeting in October, so this one was especially welcome and followed true to our tradition of choosing a different place for each meeting. The Kyosai Kaikan Club was a fine gathering place in downtown Tokyo and may well become our semi-permanent headquarters. Bryan Battey '46 arranged for the use of the dining room and we were all very pleased by the food and the service. Bryan was unable to attend because his wife was expecting a baby, but we hope to see him at the next meeting. We were also sorry to find that Herb Fish '29 was tied up in a late meeting and could not attend; he has been very busy these last few weeks, especially since he and his family will be returning to the States in early December. His wife was there, however, and we all extended to her our best wishes for the whole Fish family. They have been in Japan a long time and have done much over here and we are sorry to see them go.
This meeting brought quite a few new members and a fairly good turnout of the old ones. The new men were John Cunningham '53 and Frank O'Reilly '53, both with the Army, stationed here in Tokyo; PeteZischke '52, who came with his wife, Midge, and is with the Army in Yokohama; and EdKorn '38, who works with the Department of the Army in Tokyo. Some of these men had learned of the meeting from an announcement in the local English language newspapers. We find that this method of announcing meetings is most satisfactory as it frequently attracts men who would not otherwise know about the Club.
The old members at the meeting were as follows: Steve Pearsall '53, who is becoming a real addict of Japan and hopes to do some skiing here this winter; Kyosuke Vukuda '29, who is one of the best known members and always brings us the latest from the TokyoShimbun, one of Tokyo's leading newspapers; George Chang '30, who brought up some excellent ideas on membership and future Dartmouth men from Japan; Yon Hirota '28a, who often attends meetings; Bernie Kastenbein '49, who brought along a friend from Cornell; Takanaga Mitsui '15, who reported on his recent visit to Hanover this fall to start his son Mamoru in the freshman class, and who was elected again president of the Club and is certainly our most valuable member; Takanobu Mitsui '43, who helped in ascertaining who is actually in the Club and who we might get for future meetings if we can contact them; and William Biddle '52 who was elected the new secretary and who is doing his best to bring the D.O.C. to Japan. Some other men said they would make the meeting if they could, but it is easy to get involved at the last minute in the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. I hope no one at the meeting has been left out.
Our next meeting will be the third Thursday in December unless a special event comes up before that. Again, we would like to spread out the welcome mat for any Dartmouth men who find themselves in the Far East, whether on a semi-permanent basis or just passing through.
