Fred A. Rowland's estate, by his will, has provided funds for a new electric lightingsystem in the Public Library of Lisbon, N. H. The Littleton (N. H.) Courier of February 24 reports that this lighting system covers both the adult and juvenile reading rooms, the stack rooms, and the reference room: "It is truly an addition to the attractive library...."

After graduation from the Lisbon High School, Fred attended Phillips Andover Academy two years, then four years at Dartmouth. (An interesting account of Fred's life is given in the 50th Anniversary Book of '87's graduation. A few copies are still available ... write '87 Secretary.)

Immediately after graduation he began the study of business and law in important, privately-owned law offices, first with William P. Dillingham in Waterbury, Vt., then was admitted to the bar... two years with exJudge Young in Minneapolis ... next year became junior member of the firm of Dillingham, Huse & Howland of Montpelier, Vt.

In 1903 he began a long and most successful career with the National Life Insurance Company at Montpelier, first as general councillor; in 1910 as vice president; 1916, president. On the death of Joseph A. DeBoer (Dartmouth '84) in 1937 he became chairman of the board. Having taken a guiding hand in the splendid advance of the National Company for 34 years, he continued as its adviser till his death in '53 at the age of 89.

A noteworthy characteristic of Fred's career would seem to be steady advancement. It was his characteristic as a popular, beloved student, and as a Dartmouth graduate. He was Trustee for ten years ... a generous contributor to the progress of Dartmouth.
