ON Saturday, March 26, Dartmouth varsity spring teams headed south in the midst of a driving snow-storm which dumped six inches of snow over the Hanover plain. Two weeks later these same teams returned on a lovely Easter Sunday to be greeted by a smiling sun, balmy skies and a green campus.
Actually the varsity playing fields are still wet, but the baseball and lacrosse teams have been working out daily on the recently acquired Clark School field and are ready to move into the more formal part of their spring schedules.
Overall the Big Green teams did pretty well on their southern junket. These spring vacation games are regarded as practice sessions and Dartmouth coaches take the opportunity to evaluate the teams, holding workouts in addition to the regular contests.
For the record, however, the Indian baseball team won five and lost six games against nine service teams and two college teams. The lacrosse team, hampered to some extent by injuries, won a single contest and lost three. The tennis team had a record of five wins against two losses, and the golf team posted the best record of all with seven wins against one defeat. Totals for four of the five varsity teams (the track team did not go south) show 18 victories against 12 losses.
During vacation the Dartmouth heavyweight crews trained at the Kent School in Connecticut, while the lightweight crews were at Annapolis. The Big Green rugby team finished in second place at the Bermuda Rugby Week Tournament, while the swimming team had a series of exhibition meets against Colgate in the Caribe Hilton Hotel pool at San Juan, Puerto Rico.
