Thanksgiving is just over, but it's winter already here in Rhode Island. We've had one substantial snowfall - which is incredible, the way the past few years have been. And I understand via the crystal set that places like Buffalo and Rochester are really submerged. Perhaps we're back to the "good old days" of wintry winters.
I'm reasonably slim on fresh news this month. I guess the Holiday season has everyone too busy to make headlines. Everyone, that is, but Herb Gramstorff who's just back from a tour of Europe for the Nestle's Company in time to get married next week (December 10) to Ann Doyle of Garden City, N. Y. One of Herb's ushers will be Bob Alden. Pat and I had hoped to make it, and there's still a chance we will, depending on the babysitter situation.
A few engagement items - Paul Erwin of Merion, Pa., is engaged to Miss Catherine H. Larner of Chester, Pa. Paul is a lawyer now, after a Temple Law School degree, following his effortless days as my roomie in Hanover...
Jack Ransom of snowy Buffalo is engaged to Miss Sarah Ruth Youngmann also of Buffalo. Jack has a Tuck degree and since has just completed a three-year Army hitch as a lieutenant ... Dick Mallary of Bradford, Vt., is engaged to Miss Mary Harper Coxe of Wilton, Conn. Dick is a summa cum laude graduate and now operates his own farm and Holstein breeding establishment in Bradford. Their wedding is set for the same date as HerbGramstorff's - December 10.
Two class babies to report... Dick andPhyllis Commons of Port Washington, N. Y., greeted the arrival of Richard Arthur Commons on September 7. Dick Jr. is their first child. Daddy is a Port Washington dentist... . Ken and Mimi Wheeler of nearby (to me) Cumberland Hill, R. I., greeted Gregory Walker Wheeler on November 7. This is their second child and second son. Ken is a sales engineer for the Taft-Pierce Manufacturing Company of Woonsocket, R. I.
We dropped in on Harv and Jane Nolan last weekend en route to another social visit in Woonsocket, and the entire family was fine. Harv's two tow-head sons were throwing pillows around the living room as I entered, but otherwise serenity reigned. Harv is an executive at the McCarthy Department Store in Woonsocket.
Jack Kilmartin is working with me on the Rhode Island enrollment committee in our efforts to send bigger and better boys to Dartmouth. He knows the hockey coaches in the state better than I do, so that's his department. We have a few pretty good prospects this year, too.
I got a card from Lou and Pat Clarke out in Kansas where they miss the New England football weekends.... Also got a letter earlier this month from Peter New out in Chicago where he is with the American Osteopathic Association. Pete and Mary have made a recent visit to Russ and Betty Blackwood in Maryland. Russ is soon to finish his thesis for a Ph.D., so he'll soon be Dr. Blackwood to us illiterates. I don't mean to sound facetious, as I admire his prowess tremendously. The News also see Reed and Kay Parker "quite often." The Parkers are Chicago residents, too.
I plan a visit to Hanover in two weeks and hope to drop in on Mike and Lois McGean and John and Joan Sweetland while there. I get back to town only two or three times a year these days, and it's always a pleasure.
A letter from John Flanagan down in New Orleans discloses that he has been appointed Southern Division sales manager of the Tile-Tex Division of the Flintkote Company which encompasses all states south of the Mason-Dixon line and from the Atlantic to El Paso, Texas. Jack says it requires a lot of travelling, but is a fine promotion. Congratulations to him.
Nathan Gottschalk has been named the first recipient of the Albert Spaulding Fellowship from Boston University College of Music. Nathan is studying for his doctorate in music at B. U. while on leave from Oberlin. He is widely known for his public recitals and as a concert master and ensemble player.
Guess that's it for this time. How about a letter? Have you paid your Class Dues yet - ?? If not, write me and tell me why. It's good copy, anyway!! Belated Seasons Greetings!!
