Thanks to Treasurer Charlie Batchelder, several items of interest are given this month, but before going into the act, you are notified again that Charlie is anxious to get as many dues paid as possible before you take off for Florida, Arizona, or way stations. If you want to keep the treasurer really happy, pay your dues up to the next reunion which is not far away.
Bert Symonds has been an an officer of the Second National Bank, now the Second Bank State Street Trust Co., in Boston, for many years. As of October 1, he has retired and can be reached at 8 Palmer Road, Marblehead, Mass. Another retirement is Fred Campbell who ended a service of long-standing with the John Hancock Life on November i. He is living at 94 Plymouth Avenue, Milton, Mass. Luke Giles writes, "This retirement is great stuff," as he takes off for Florida, ostensibly in his trailer as he is staying at the Kozy Trailer Park, Rural Route 1, Bradenton, from now until March.
Our roving reporter, Herb Austin, was one of a group of newspapermen visiting Mississippi at the invitation of the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission. At the time of the Massachusetts State Primary Elections in September, Art Woodies was chairman of a committee of Dartmouth men promoting Harris Reynolds '35 for the Governor's Council. From sources believed to be entirely authentic, it is reported that Bob Hopkins retired January 1, 1956, after a very successful service with "The New Yorker." Much credit is due Bob for the success that publication has attained. Rumor has it that Bob is renewing his acquaintance with the piano and is happily leading the life of the country squire. Maybe he will give us some real news on this so we can give you facts instead of rumor.
From Rutland, Vt., we learn that Bob Noble has retired as Principal of the Whitcomb High School. Bob has a long and varied experience in the teaching profession, ending with 26 years as a principal, first in South Royalton and then in Rutland.
The Hanover Gazette of August 2 carried an article on Leonard White and his use of the Baker Library for research in connection with his writings. He gives high praise to the staff and the facilities. Prexy Buck was in Hanover early in September, as chairman of the annual meeting of the class bequest and estate planning chairmen. In October you saw the picture of Ted Main attending his last luncheon of the Holyoke Dartmouth Club before taking off for Florida. That all happened in August. It has now developed that the Main family went to Cocoa Beach, and the secret is out, the Main family is ensconced at 1081 South Orlando Avenue, Cocoa Beach, Fla. Ted says he won't be back for football games this fall, but he and Marion will be on hand for the 45th.
Jesse Babcock wants his address changed to 960 Vanderbilt Ave., Niagara Falls, N. Y., as he is retiring soon after many years with the Hooker Electrochemical Co. Art Maddelena retired June 29 from the Metropolitan Life Ins. Co. after 32 years of service. He is now living at Pond View Drive, Centerville (Cape Cod), Mass. Art hopes itinerant members of the Class will drop in. Bill Fletcher's boy, Bill Jr., is an assistant junior resident in surgery at the Boston City Hospital. He has his Fifth Reunion in June '57.
