Your scribe has just returned from the base library where a three-day-old New York Times brought news of another Big Green conquest. The victory over Columbia is not too impressive when considered alone, but looking back over the last nine outings, any loyal Dartmouth fan can't help but feel some pride in the Green's current string of victories. I only regret that yours truly failed to witness any of the games in question, but am sure the Class was well represented by fellow Fifty-five followers of the fray.
Uncle Sam has an unconscious knack of keeping Fifty-fives "in touch." The other noon, I ran into Dave Conlin while standing in line (an old military custom) for lunch at the local Officers' Club. Dave just graduated from Laredo —a be-winged first lieutenant and is now going through Basic Instructors School here at Craig. A couple of weeks ago, Dave had a rendezvous with Gordie Russell and Doug Archibald at Macon, Ga. Gordie and Doug are both currently stationed in the "land of the boll-weevil," Gordie as an electronics specialist of some sort in Savannah, and Doug as an intelligence officer at Shaw AFB in South Carolina.
Red Hennigar writes from the other extreme of the Eastern seaboard - Presque Isle, Me., where he's flying F-89's with the Air Defense Command. Red and Jill have a new addition to the family - Andrew Dana born last July. According to Red, Ed (Sorrowful) Jones is on his way to Japan for a twoyear tour as a communications officer, and Chet Gale is now out of the Air Force, and in Harvard Business School.
Elsewhere in the service, Lt. John Wetzel received his wings at graduation ceremonies held at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo. John's future assignment is unknown at present. Dave Elder has recently been honorably discharged from the Air Force, and is now with the staff of the Mutual Plumbing and Heating Company in Amherst, Mass. Dave was stationed at Lockbourne AFB in Columbus, Ohio, during his tour of duty. Lt. Charlie Williams received his wings as an Air Force Navigator after completing a 42-week course at Ellington AFB. Texas. Charlie will proceed to Mather AFB, Calif., for advanced training in reconnaissance bombardment.
Fred Lione just completed the second phase in his six months' tour of duty in the Army. This phase - of eight weeks' duration - concerned basic administrative training. Fred's wife, Sallianne, is holding the fort at their home in Stamford while Fred fulfills his military obligation.
Bob (W) Hayes is stationed at Fort Lawton, Wash., with the Twentieth Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion. Bob's a radio operator in the headquarters battery there.
Al Pill who's stationed with the U. S. Army Engineer Center at Fort Knox, was chosen "Enlisted Aide for the Day-" to the Commander of the Center for his outstanding military conduct and achievement.
Now, for our monthly gallop down the bridal path. Dick Forsberg is engaged to Fanny Lou Hubbell of New Haven. The bride-to-be is a graduate of Becker Junior College in Worcester, Mass. John Bassette and Ann Boyle were married this fall. Ann's a graduate of Fisher Junior College in Boston and attended UNH. John completed his tour in the army where he served as an instructor with mountain climbing and ski-troops at Camp Hale, Colo., and is now associated with the Eskimo Ski Shop in Denver.
Lt. Rufus Choate married Marilyn White of Englewood, N. J. Marilyn is a Mount Holyoke alumna. Lito Herrera and Carol Herrick of Melrose, Mass., were married in Paris, France, this past September. Carol is a Holyoke grad and was employed by the Carnegie Corporation in New York City. Lito graduated from Columbia Business School last June, and he and Carol plan to live in London while he completes his studies at the London School of Economics.
Paul Mannes and Karen Klein were married. in Philadelphia last September. Karen is a Connecticut College alumna, and Paul recently received his Law Degree at Georgetown. Bill De Cesare was an usher at the ceremony. Lt. Walt Lamb and Helen Wetzel of Dayton, Ohio, were married at a ceremony held in the Chapel at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. Helen is a security officer at the Aeronautical Research Laboratories there.
From Cambridge comes news of more honors for Dave Page at the Harvard Law School. Dave, now in his third year at the School, was invited to membership on the Editorial Board of the Harvard Law Review, and has been awarded a Prize Scholarship for his distinguished record at the institution. Both of these represent distinct honors for Dave who has done more than his share to help maintain Dartmouth's reputation of high academic standing.
Bob Wool, who's been on Look's Editorial Research staff since 1956, has been promoted to the post of Assistant Department Editor. Our congratulations to Bob for his outstanding record thus far.
Well, that's about the end of the line for fifty-seven. Best wishes to you and your families for a joyful holiday season and a happy and prosperous New Year.
