Your secretary is still riding cloud six after the Executive Committee meeting held on the weekend of the Holy Cross game. It was an open meeting and all of you with wives and children were cordially invited. There was such a wonderful turnout that it was decided to have another one in the fall of 1957. Next time more comfortable accommodations are promised to the girls who were such good sports this time.
Those who were there: Nick Xanthaky and Alice made the first evening complete with a showing of movies taken at reunions and at Bob Smith's and Nels Krogslund's picnics. Jack Gilbert and Jane celebrated their seventeenth wedding anniversary in separate rooms. It just wasn't possible to get them in the bridal suite. On top of everything Jack had a terrible toothache, but it didn't interfere with his cool piano. Glad to relate he is playing better than ever. Marty Dwyer and his Joy drove up with me and brought a tape recorder with all the great recordings of Casa Loma, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong made during our college days. Tom Beers and Mary flew in from Chicago and, as we left the Keene's on Sunday, they were the last to leave and wave us good-bye. Tom hasn't lost that wonderful smile and looks as if he had graduated in '54 and Mary looks like a child bride. That other Committeeman from the Windy City, Bob Engelman, and Mary had a room all to themselves on Friday but our hostess, Mrs. Keene, had to renege on Saturday. So after dinner Bob and Mary left to see their son who is attending prep school in the East. The following Tuesday they saw "My Fair Lady" along with Harry Gilmore and Prue.
Harry gave a glowing report as Class Agent and the class came up with a fourteen carat nugget when Ducky accepted that job. We missed their son Tony who was incarcerated at St. Paul's. Frank Heath and his charming Laura drove all the way from Cleveland to be present. Frank is a partner in that City's largest and best law firm, Jones, Day, Cockley & Reavis. He is going to show us how to contribute to the Memorial Fund, avoid capital gains taxes and take advantage of such large tax deductions that a contribution to the fund will actually result in a profit to the donor. Roily Morton explained this to me. Roily and Dotty spent the weekend with Red Rolfe because they had decided at the last minute that they could get to Hanover before Roily had to plane out to Las Vegas.
George Kimball and Nan were there and even though their son Dan is a freshman at Cornell, their allegiance is Big Green. Their daughter Leah now an engineer's assistant with Esso in Linden, N. J., announced her engagement to Lawrence J. Scott of Easton, Pa., and Cornell '56. Leah will be a June bride and our felicitations to both of you. Incidentally Nan Kimball gave me a great suggestion at the meeting on how to get more information for the class notes. Her simple but intelligent thought — to write to the wives instead of their busy and letter-writing-hating spouses. You wives can expect some billets doux in the near future.
Bob Smith and Edie were the first to arrive having solved their sitter problem early. No one can believe that young Edie Smith is the mother of four, but it's in the record book. Pop can pop his buttons — he has a honey. George Copp and Marge were the life of the party and the cause of much personal consternation until I had him properly bedded down. His good friend Jeff Jackson (voted the best wit) is working on a Jaguar for George and a fur coat for Marge even though our ex-agent has pledged a sizeable contribution to the Memorial Fund. Under Jeff's stoogeship we will all drive and do better.
Bill Wilson and Jo checked in in ample time to give the Treasurer's report. Parliamentary procedure went by the boards and after four votes it was decided to raise the class dues from $5 to $6 beginning in 1957 and to drop from the receivers of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE those disinterested Indians who have failed to pay their dues, 10, these many moons. One last effort will be made to get them into the fold and then the permanent umbilical cord will be severed.
Bill arranged with the college to have all of '34 who attended the game sit in Section 2. I saw Art Leonard, Peanut Davies with Helen and Terry (just appointed Manager of Track at college), Ray Hulsart with Shirley and Sharon, Bob Douglass and Kay (who spent Saturday night with us, and called me "Droon" for auld times sake), Dave Murphy, HerbHeston (as far as we know, the first grandfather in the class - congratulations on being a dapper gray), Al Jacobson with Lucile and Susan (who with Sharon Hulsart thoroughly captivated Les Reeve's son, Mark - rendering him almost inarticulate), Jack Fogarty to see his son who is a Junior at Dartmouth (110 relation to the Walter Fogarty on the football team), Alden Clark with his son newly matriculated at college, Bill Carr of Maytag Co. fame with his wife Rebecca, Nelson McClary and his wife Gert (as pretty a school marm as you'll ever see) and many others whom I glimpsed but whose names I forgot to jot down on my ticket stub.
Let me add at this point that Art Moebius and Ruth were with us at our business meetings registering the same for posterity with camera and flash bulb, as did Nick Xanthaky and Marty Dwyer. Your secretary sported a vest made for him by Liz which was a conversation piece. Bill Scherman who planed in on Saturday morning deserves all the credit for conceiving this wonderfully amusing and thoroughly enjoyable get-together. Mr. '34 take a bow!
I still haven't covered some of the serious aspects of the meeting and will do so if Bill's newsletter doesn't scoop me.
One random note: Alan Hewitt's picture was in the New York papers. On October 22 he went into "Inherit The Wind" to play the part of Hornbeck, the reporter, modelled after H. L. Mencken. His role in this play, featuring Paul Muni, brings him one step nearer to stardom.
By the time you read these notes there will be mighty few shopping days left before Christmas - so let me wish you a Merry one and the Happiest of New Years.
