Hi Gang - first of all thanks to those of you who have been dropping "Old Gus" a line or two. You know, writing a newsletter like this is like a snowball; it doesn't get any bigger until we hear from more and more of you. The more letters and news we get from all of you greatly help us to write a better and more complete story of "who's doing what." So please drop us a penny postcard (oops, two cent postcard) every now and then to let us know where you are and what's happening to you.
Elsewhere on these pages you will find the complete Alumni Fund Report with a listing of contributors. Our number of contributors is large, but on the other hand it should be, since we are Dartmouth's biggest class. And frankly, those contributions didn't come in all by themselves. There was a tremendous amount of work done and a great number of you assisted Class Agent Jack Whitman on the Drive; names of those Assistant Class Agents should be in this issue — if not, we'll let you know who to "pat on the back" next month. We would like to commend particularly though, Jim Pensmith, who led all Assistant Class Agents in both contributors and dollar amounts.
Incidentally, speaking of money (although we don't want to sound like bill collectors), send your check for Class Dues to AndyMurtha, our esteemed Class Treasurer, at the address above. Don't forget, included in those dues are the ALUMNI MACAZINE, which I am sure you read from "civer to civer" every month. Don't forget also that our 10th Reunion couldn't have been the success it was without some surplus in the Treasury. Remember we have a 15th Reunion in '61.
News from the Big City and Surroundings via Reg Pierce, "the ad man": Ben Moats organized a '46 party at his "new" 300-year-old home in Wilton (Fairfield County), Conn., after the Yale game at the Bowl. It was "bring your own bottle party" and working with him were Ralph Smith, Doug Leigh, Jim Lynch,Andy Murtha and Aud Brindley. Frank Ettari and Bob Winstanley among others gave indication of being aboard. By the time you get this, the game and party will be a thing of the past and we're sorry we couldn't have told more of you about it before. Incidentally, Ben has a new position with McKinsey & Com- pany, Inc., management consultants in N.Y.C. Ben has been with Giant Food Stores, a Washington, D. C. grocery chain, since 1954 and he and Jerry are very delighted about the new position and move to suburban Connecticut.
Frank Ettari, "the old coal peddler," is now a VP with Dexter Carpenter Coal and obviously is moving up the ladder.... Andyand June Murtha are back from their six-weeks European trip and Andy and Reg Pierce recently set up our tremendously big Class bank account at the Chase Manhattan Bank.... Bill Hart and Art Harris are still raving about the reunion and want an nth next year! (Incidentally, the Class of '47 is using our stuff in preparation for their 10th Reunion next summer - another tribute to our Reunion Chairman Andy Murtha and all of his committee).... Our ex-All American Dale Armstrong was in the big city several weeks ago and is planning on being at the Yale game.... The David Cheever Welds (the old Hose Nose) spent a wonderful month in Chebeague Island, Maine, in August and Reg reports he looks terrific. Reg and the rest of us are trying to track down Jim O'Neil - check in won't you, Jim, and let us know where you are ... thanks for all the above, Reg and do let us know when you and Nance come out with Pierce #5.
Thisa and Thata - Ralph Smith has been elected to the Board of Governors of the Dartmouth Club of New York.... Bill Poole was a recent overnight guest at the "D" club. ... John L. E. Wolff, M.D., dropped us a nice note from New York where he is doing clinical cancer research with the National Institute of Health. He is also on the faculty of New York Medical College and is medical director of student health for the college. John finished his residency in Internal Medicine at Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospital before taking up the new work. He reports that Bill and Mary Rosenfeld have a new Dartmouth man in Bill IV. Also that HowieSloman is an M.D. and is practicing Internal Medicine in Conn. — glad to hear from you, John.... John Handel had quite an experience in the Bermuda Yacht Race when his for'stay gave way 250 miles out during a squall. John is in the importing and exporting business with Intraglobal Associates Inc., at 550 Fifth Ave., N.Y.C.... Ted "the Faj"Fajen reports on his recent move to Manitowoc, Wis. He says the martinis are flowing since his new next door neighbor is a '40 and the old "duck call" is working well. Patty has only about a month to go on "Faj #3" but took in some duck hunting with the old man and got her limit. Faj reports hearing from ObeObermayer and ail seems to be good with him and the Keekeffer Company in the "Land 'o Lakes." Give us more news, Faj.
Dayton Doings - Bob Kimball, our old roommate at 43½ S. Main and your ex-Class Agent and Treasurer, came close to our town the other day and gave us a very welcome phone call from Columbus. He reports that Jackie has produced another Smith or Vassar girl for the family, making this number four - they've sure worked hard for that Dartmouth guy but to no avail. Kim is in sales management work for the Hood Rubber of Watertown, Mass., and is very active in the Boston and Melrose (Mass.) Dartmouth Alumni Associations. He says Billy Riley and the rest of the Riley tribe are going great guns in both the automobile and insurance business around Boston. . . . Andy Carstensen '45 popped into town the other day from Cleveland and reported that he and Betsy were to spend the weekend in Buffalo with Jack and Rosie Marlette and take in the Dartmouth-Cornell game at Ithaca. . . . Ran into BudWelch, the old Beta '44, who is in Louisville as district manager for the L. M. Berry Co. ... Dick Scharrer is the new President of the Dayton Dartmouth Alumni Association with "Old Gus" as Interviewing Chairman and Harry M. "Mac" Dunlap '52 (who is now associated in our agency here with New England Mutual Life) as Enrollment Chairman.
New Bits - It was wedding bells recently for Don Reardon and Marie Theresa Kelly in Dolgeville, near Utica, N. Y. The bride is a graduate of New York State University at Brockport, N. Y., and is teaching at Sauquoit Valley School. Don is vice-president of the Daniel Green Co. in Dolgeville.... JoeClain is living in New Milford, N. J., and is the 7th grade teacher at the Municipal Square School.
Recent lucky Hanover Inn visitors - KenFulton, the old motorcyclist, and Mac McLane, Mr. and Mrs. Craig Bedle who are now living in Norwich, Conn., Joe Masters and wife from Concord, Mass., and the JohnAldens from Needham, Mass. Also Mr. andMrs. D. C. Foukal from Cleveland and the "old lumber hawker" Spence Smith - lucky people. That's about it gang - send your class dues to Andy Murtha - Al and I send you all our very best and please do drop us a line.
