We feel badly reporting the expected death of our classmate and class treasurer, Fred Vogt. This most conscientous guy had been suffering from prostate cancer while carrying on his active life and duties with our books, slowly getting worse until he was taken August 12. His obituary will follow. He shall be missed.

Katie and your secretary returned from a small reunion of sorts. That great lady Rachel Laughton invited us and Marie(Whitehill) and her new husband, John Mairhuber, for the weekend in South Dennis. To celebrate she also invited Martha and Bob Bosworth to share a roast beef and yorkshire pudding dinner par excellence! John is a math professor at the University of Maine, Orono, teaching undergraduate as well as graduate courses. Marie has moved into John's home there while continuing with her AARP work with the state legislature. He is a most likeable guy and it was nice to see them together. Martha and Boz have completed their new home and moved in only a month ago. They are only 6 miles from Rachel in Cummiquid, where they will probably be until November when Naples' warmer winds beckon. Their new home has a view of the Cape Cod Bay not far away. They completely remodeled a comfortable older place into an outstanding new home. Boz has his garden to look forward to next year and Martha now plays at the Hyannisport Golf Club. Also invited to this dinner reunion was our widow golfer, Jane Handrahan, who lives not far away on the Cape Cod Canal, in Plymouth. The two ladies made immediate golfing plans.

Monk Amon is justly proud of son Tom's wife Carol, who has made a name for herselfm as trial lawyer and federal magistrate with a possibility of a judgeship later on. Monk calls her a brilliant girl so we guess it runs in the family!

Speaking of the law, among three young folk earning law degrees from the Schenectady, N.Y., law school of Union College was Sheila Shea, daughter of our own Judge Shea of Ogdansburg.

We regret having to report the death of Arnie Shapiro's wife, Dot, who had a long bout with cancer. Arnie retired from the Eastern Baking Company and his other business interests, spending the winter months in Palm Beach.

We received a nice note from Ham Chase '47, whom we had thanked for his nice remarks on our write-up on MuttRay. He learned to enthuse over Dartm outh football greats from his father '09. They were in Hanover for a game in 1937. Seems he was learning to drive and knocked a car trying to park on Main Street. It was my Dad's car he hit, but since his Dad and mine were classmates the incident passed quickly. Ham did apologize to us! Last spring we applauded Jim Gray for a number a successes in business (TV stations, newspaper, seven times mayor of Albany,Ga., Gray Air Service, the Big 10 Tire Stores, two wareh ouses, distribution centers, Gray Communications centers, etc.) He has now added the Gray Real Estate and Development company. The Atlanta BusinessChronicle hailed Gray Communications as the "Chronicle Public Company of the Year." Down there he's known as "Lord Jim," "Citizen Gray," and "the Man with the Golden Touch." Maybe he would fly up to our 50th reunion if properly urged. Any ideas?

A postcard from Mary Lou and Bill Falion says they were on an Elder Hostel at University of Arizona learning about the geology of the region as well as Hopi and Navajo culture, saying, too, that the dormitory life is "helping prepare them for the 50th." We see that 37's 50th is well launched officially with our Big Money Guns' first appeal toward the class reunion gift. It shows some comparative figures from 1936 as well as our early progress of $227,197 for 1987 Alumni Fund. The goal is $5,000,000, so between the fund and all other bequests and expectancies, we are well on the way.

Last July we journeyed to Virginia Beach again, where our nine-year-old grandson is doing fine. We were happy to see Virge Fuller doing well responding to transfusions and dialysis. Whitey was conducting dog obedience classes the first time we stopped. He is very enthusiastic about coming to the 50th.

We called up Martin Schara, whose retirement from Firestone International is abetted by buying and selling condominiums with his wife. His present address is 4901 Ocean View, Virginia Beach, VA 23455. He needs a push to come to reunion. His phone is 804/460-3281 or 4255007.
