October - 8:13 Sunday evening - a comfy chair - London Philharmonic on A FN. a glass nearby, and my mind begins to reminisce a bit. Join me, won't you?

Balch Hill comes into view in all its red, green, and yellow beauty; a loud wah-hoo-wah resounds against the hill as a halfback cuts off tackle for 10 and the band jumps into the breach to echo - "Touchdown, Touchdown, Dartmouth" - a bite into one of Tanzi's apples causes a delicious smack of the lips - the stockade on the porch of Dartmouth House, a few scalped haircuts, a little green paint, followed by a battle of brawn which resulted in a few rope burns, soaked clothes, and at the same time the intangible development of a class esprit. Fraternity rushing, without the aid of an IBM matching card system, can not be forgotten, nor the "Saints" as only Rusty Jackman could play it, nor Robert Frost's reading of "Birches," nor the march on Dean Neidlinger's home, the kidnap of one Brock Brower during election time, Mrs. Ives' genial welcome at the Inn, the Korean War and the rush for deferment status, a coffee frappe at Putnam's after the 1902 Room closed, nor Professor Charles Siepmann's lecture on the "Twilight Sleep of Individuality;" the Columbine circling Hanover and the Ike caravan arriving in Hanover greeted by Mike Duffy's Hi-fi set blaring a Sousa march from the steps of C & G, nor the strains of "Dartmouth Undying" led by Paul Zeller anywhere, anytime.

Sort of fun sometimes just to think back over the past and question the future - but I assure you that reverie will not be standard copy for your new class secretary; rather he will attempt to dedicate his column to an expression of this class's own unique history and quality of devotion and caring for Dart- mouth. We have much behind us, we have a great deal ahead of us.

Anyone who was in attendance at the "Advanced sth Reunion" in June can state affirmatively that '53 is alive, it is creative, and it is sincerely dedicated to the preservation of all that is the best in Dartmouth. I suggest to you this just didn't happen, it wasn't something that just suddenly developed. I suggest that we were led to this position by the efforts of many devoted classmates and by the genuine response of everyone. This class owes a sincere debt of gratitude to Ed Boyle who managed to pilot us so very capably through undergraduate days and four years of alumni activity - keeping the ball rolling through this column, his personal correspondence with each of us, and his contact with Hanover. Ed, thanks from all of us! Dick Cahn - our hat is tipped to you for a grand job as editor par excellence of the Class Newsletter - bringing us the "sugar and spice" of class activity through interesting and timely publications of " '53 Out." Charlie Fleet, and John Corcoran you made us fully aware of our financial obligation to the College at Alumni Fund time - a difficult task handled exceptionally well. In four short years, the "Little Green Derby" was garnered, with all the prestige that is associated with achievement of this trophy. The increasing aggressiveness with which our campaigns have been administered and the generous response of one and all is a source of class pride that should have cause to grow in future years.

Dick Calkins is to be congratulated for his errorless bookkeeping and trusteeship of the class coffers - and so the list goes - TomBloomer and his committee gave '53 a weekend in Hanover to chalk up as nothing less than "the greatest" (in white-buck slang!).

53's past portends a productive and happy future. I think I am reading 53's mind when I say we want it that way and are willing to work to make it so; only in that way can we be truly a living part of Dartmouth.

I sincerely hope this column will serve towards that end. One of our biggest obligations to each other is just to keep in touch. Through the written word we can build a bondship over the years that will girdle the earth with our own "53ism." This is your column. C'mon and use it! Bring us up to date on your current activities and your family make this a sounding board for any new ideas you think the class might adopt, (i.e.: The thought struck me the other day that we might establish a class bowling trophy in the winter and a golf trophy in the summer. We might set aside one week when all scores would be sent into the class for determination of a winner. A silver cup would be bought (donated?) and each year the winner's name would be engraved upon it—then on the 10th, 15th, 25th Reunion the cup would be retired and awarded to the person winning the cup the highest number of times. How's it sound?)

In conclusion, I am extremely proud to be embarking on the new responsibility of serving as your Class Secretary. I have a firm conviction that our class is on its way to becoming one of Dartmouth's great alumni bodies, and in so doing fulfilling individual and collective responsibilities to Dartmouth.

Waiting to hear from you. Please note the APO address and air mail your letters.

May the Christmas Season and New Year be a very happy and joyful one for each of you!
