ENGAGED
The big news here in Chicago is the wonderful announcement of Ted's engagement to Patricia (Patty) Williams of Winnetka, Ill. Patty, a graduate of Penn Hall Junior College and Lake Forest College, has not set a specific wedding date, but tentatively plans to meet Ted at the altar in late winter. Ted is one of those guys who has developed many, many close Dartmouth friendships and who has given much of himself to our class and to the College, so on this joyous occasion we collectively wish to say: "Congratulations, Ted and Patty — and many years of great happiness!"
It was really great to hear from many of you via the Dartmouth Night post card. I am still receiving them every day and plan to pass on just as much news each month as possible, limited only by column space. I'll start with cards received first and go right on from there. After reading many of these brief reports, I think you'll agree with me that our class collectively has much to be proud of - strong family, business, and professional ties, both domestically and internationally. Take a look for yourself.
There was absolutely no "Twilight Sleep of Individuality" in Jack Upham's reply. An envelope was received enclosing the post card with this inscription: "This card presumes an uneventful life devoid of family and affiliations. See attached compendium."
Jack writes:
I think the last time I wrote was a few years back when I was working for Armstrong Cork Company. I am now in New York working as a free lance producer — writer of business presentations (sales meetings, shows, films, etc.) in association with the Viscount Group and Palmer-Littmann, Inc. both of New York, as well as work on my own. I am also salaried with McCann Erickson in developing meetings, shows and films. My wife Elaine and three children, and I live in Larchmont, N. Y. A few weeks ago Elaine and I went to a place called Manero's in Greenwich, Conn, (highly recommended) and I looked up at the next table to see Herb Borovsky, in town from Chicago visiting friends.
Jack Patten, Division Manager for McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, Denver, Colo. - "Recently became a private pilot and toured the Hawaiian Islands by plane. Also a member of A.O.P.A?" Sandy Farmer married to Margaret Fuerst in August 1958 - now "just started full-time study on Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Columbia - four-year program." Carl England, wife Joanna, and child Elin make their home in Penfield, N. Y., where Carl is Product Manager, Military Marketing Department, Stromberg-Carlson, a Division of General Dynamics Corporation.
Down on the Cape, Bill Burns has just taken up the teaching of social studies in Lawrence High School in Falmouth. Bill received his Master's degree in education from Tufts University in 1956. He has been principal for the past two years of Brighton High School, Island Pond, Vt. Three-year-old Margo keeps Susan and Bill "teaching her" - just for fun. Bruce and Nancy Sherman, with year-old son David, live in Stamford, Conn., and Bruce takes up daytime quarters as Advertising Account Executive on Coty Cosmetics at B.B.D. and O. in New York. Bernard and Joan Dunnan are proud parents of Judy and Joy, ages four and one respectively - and Bernard states, "My new job as principal of the junior high school in Stow, Ohio, plus the obtaining of a Master's degree in 1959 have highlighted the past year." And welcome news comes from Al Hathcock in St. Louis where he is now a resident in orthopedic surgery at Barnes Hospital. He notes: "Jim Rose will be here next year as a resident in medicine." Al and Barbara recently celebrated their second anniversary and have a son Stephen Allen. The mail was heavy from Missouri - the same day I heard from Stew Thompson who has been an architect with Hellmuth, Obata, and Kassabaum, Inc., since July 1959 after completing graduate work at Harvard in 1957. Christopher, three, and Victoria, four months old, will be looking starry eyed under the Christmas tree as Stew and Joan enjoy Christmas 1960.
Buzz D'Avanzo holds his M.A. in education from Trinity College and Ph.D. from Brown University. He now is an instructor in English at Providence College in Providence, R. I. From Crossett, Ark., comes the grand word that John Bender was recently promoted to manager of the Paper Bag Division of Chase Bag Company in Crossett. John and Alice have five children and John writes: "Saw Dick Joslin in Cincinnati inAugust where he is Assistant to the Presidentof Champion Paper Company."
Another year comes to an end and anotherjoyous time of year approaches - a time ofyear when the past and the future are joinedby the sincere wish of "Merry Christmas andHappy New Year."
