I can well recall back in high school when Jack Grimm coolly announced that he'd be earning $10,000 or more two years after he was out of college. Those were the days when a $40 a week job was pretty jazzy. "Marketing" magazine recently featured Jack and his great marketing coup with Ultra- Brite toothpaste. They start the article with "No one was less surprised when Jack Grimm was named a vice president of Colgate-Palmolive than Jack Grimm himself. He planned it that way." They then chronologize the plan he worked to become an important marketer ... from his start at Macy's for basic merchandising to other respected stopping places such as Borden Co., Lever Bros., J. B. Williams, to Sterling Drugs where as V.P. in charge of Bayer Aspirin, Phillips' Milk of Magnesia and Midol, he gained the experience he felt he needed to handle the toughest of marketing jobs. To do battle in the toothpaste jungle and take on heavyweights in the marketing field like Procter and Gamble is precisely what Jack planned to do. And do it he did, to the astonishment and chagrin of his competitors, with the result that his new toothpaste appears to have captured 11% of the market. If you're not now using Ultra-Brite, do so. Jack says it gives your mouth sex appeal.

Johnny Lesser is now director of personnel for New York based Amerace Corp., a diversified manufacturer of rubber and plastic products. Johnny still makes his home in Larchmont.

Dave Nutt recently ran into Hardy Caldwell at the American Gas Association Convention in Chicago. You'll be interested to know that Buz Bensinger and his wife, Jean, are now proud grandparents. Their son-in- law is a Princeton man and it will be interesting to see where the young man eventually goes to school. The Bensingers were at the Princeton game and saw a lot of '44s and particularly enjoyed visiting with BuddWelsh. The Bensingers operate the Camel Back ski resort at the Poconos and obviously are having an excellent year. Speaking of offspring going to Dartmouth, Bill Trier's son, young Bill, entered the freshman class last fall.

As you leaf through your New Yorker magazine, you'll see the El Conquistador's ad about their new championship golf course and, also, that the man to contact for a perfect vacation is their general manager, George Cummings.

I was at the B. F. Goodrich Sponge Rubber Products plant in Shelton, Conn., last week. This is the company that Fred Daley and his dad operated for many years. They still love to speak about the Daleys and tell how when Fred was in college, he would work at the plant during the summer and spend most of his time down in the boiler room, learning the fine art of pugilism from a former boxing great who was then employed by their company.

Lt. Col. Gene Callagan has been assigned to the Grumman Aircraft engineering corps in Bethpage where, he is currently acting as business manager. Sherm Davies is now making his home in Birmingham, Mich.

There was recently an interesting article in the Medical Tribune about Dr. Gordy Vanden Noort and the talk he gave at the Germantown Symposium on sports-medicine, dealing with football injuries and how to spot them at an early stage when fast treatment can prevent serious effects.

In his new assignment, Bob is responsible for all field timberland operations, including inventories, regeneration, research, recreation and related land uses.

Phil W. Brown, executive vice president of North and Judd, recently was named to assume additional responsibility of implementation of company policy at the firm's Wilcox-Crittendon division. Phil has been with the firm since joining them as a sales trainee in 1946 and in 1962 was elected executive vice president and a director of the company.

I guess we all knew that career diplomat Bill Turpin was a pretty smart fellow, particularly after winning his Phi Beta key and going on to Oxford, but I didn't realize just how smart until I saw a little piece in the newspaper about him recently where they point out that he can converse fluently in Russian, French, German, Dutch and has a good working knowledge of Viet Namese, Japanese, and Servo-Croat. Throughout his varied career with the State Department, Bill has had important assignments in Munich, Belgrade, Moscow, The Hague, and Saigon.
