Notes from a trip West and South - Al, Ginger and I have just returned from a 3½ week auto trip throughout the "wild and wooly" West and home through the deep South. On that trip we naturally ran into some Dartmouths. Our first attempt was in Tulsa where we tried to call Dick Pringle, but couldn't reach him. Three years ago on another trip West we spent a pleasant day and night with Dick in the oil capitol. After leaving Hanover the ex-Big Green golfer studied petroleum engineering at both the University of Okla. and Tulsa University and then went into the oil business (as does everyone in Okla., it seems) and has done well. He has a charming wife, a lovely home and is busy raising a family. Old red head, Bob Glass '45, is in Tulsa and has a very thriving trucking business — saw him then too. On to Phoenix and the Valley of the Sun. During our stay there I looked up Dr. Wayne Frerichs. We had a very pleasant get-together and our Class's only native Arizonian seemed sincerely glad to see someone from '46. After finishing Medical School at the University of California, a residency at Yale Med, internship at Mary Hitchcock and three years in the Army Medical Corps, Wayne has settled down to fast becoming one of Phoenix's most prominent ear, nose and throat men. He has two children and while Arizona is "home" - he yearns for "The Plain." Wayne filled me in on other 46's out that way — Ed Cummings is with the First National Bank of Phoenix and Hal Bowman and Joe Donahue are both with the Tri State Natural Gas Company in Dallas. Hal (Wayne's old roommate) is Vice President of the firm and evidently inveigled "Smiling Joe" to come along.

On down through southern Texas and Corpus Christi and up to Houston and New Orleans via the booming little town of Orange, Texas. There we spent an evening with Bob "Coach" Burke '45 and wife Andy. Coach is a regular Chamber of Commerce for his community there while juggling the test tubes for duPont. He promises to send Dartmouth a 210-pound half-back who runs the hundred in 10 flat. On home through Birmingham and Memphis but no more Dartmouths. However, the day after I returned a phone call brought the deep Southern drawl of Sam Smartt, brother-in-law of Jim Kennedy. Sam and I got together that night and he brought me up-to-date on "Shuffling Jim" and "Smokey Joe" Davenport, Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain's contribution to '46. Sam and Jim are Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer, respectively of Cherokee Warehouses, Inc. From the sales portfolio Sam showed me, Jim is evidently using every spare building in southern Tenn. to warehouse northern goods. Jim is married to the former Dottie Hillerstadt of Chattanooga and they have three little Kennedys. My other old roommate (can you imagine rooming with two different guys from one southern town?), Joe Davenport, is a real picture of business success. He is fast stepping into his father's foot steps as Executive Vice President of the Davenport Hosiery Mills and is active in all kinds of civic affairs including being President of his golf club and Secretary of the Chattanooga Dartmouth Club. Incidentally, I'll bet we could claim more hosiery manufactured by '46 than any other class - Joe Davenport's famous "Hummingbirds" and Mush Judson's well known Mojud line. Anyway back to Joe - he and Alice have either five or six children (Sam wasn't sure). Joe stopped through here a couple of years ago on a peddling tour and we sure would like to see him again.

The Mail Bag - Trudy Pert (Mrs. James H.) writes that Dr. Jim is an internist at the New York. Hospital, Department of Gastroenterology and has been doing a number of speaking engagements on his research projects. Already this year he has been in Columbus, N. Y., Colorado Springs and Atlantic City. The Perts have settled for the time being in Closter, N. J., and announce the arrival of Hilary, their second daughter along with one son, Jim Jr. - thanks, Trudy Old Skier, Schuy Cross (how about that alliteration - English I, Prof. Watson) writes a very newsy letter to tell me that Frank O'Neill and I evidently got a few of the Denver '46s mixed up professionally. To set the record straight - Fletch Thomas is not a doctor, but is an attorney practicing with his brother as Thomas and Thomas in Denver. Goose Brusse is President (not Vice President) of Rocky Mountain Metal Products Company, manufacturers of specialized dental equipment on an international scale and Schuy praises their plant operation and size. Marty Hamilton joined the company two years ago as East Coast representative. Schuy himself is in the general insurance business with two other Dartmouth men as partners and he and Melba announce their fourth child and second son, Jeff in December of 1956 - Thanks to you, Schuy!

Just returned from Hanover for the Class Officers weekend. Weather was delightful, Hanover pleasant and much news about the Fund and the Hopkins Center plans. He and Fran and two girls (second, one month old) are heading for Colorado in July to set up practice.
