It seems I caused quite a rumble when I announced to you that Reunion would be June 12-14. Phil Penberthy has the situation unjazzed and points out that in truth the affair will be held the weekend of June 19-21. Coming from headquarters, that's the date to mark down on the calendar ... June 19-21!
As a fillip to the fracas, Needle Allen will conduct an auction. Everyone is asked to donate something connected with his line of work which will go under the hammer. For example dentist Barradale might toss in a few thousand yards of used dental floss, Cadillac dealer Bill Orr might be inclined to go with an Eldorado, Stan Zarod, a case of second-hand election buttons, etc. What do you think Jack Haffenreffer will come in with?
The ladies have come through very nicely with information for the directory, for which we thank you. To those who have not yet sent in the'mailing, your early attention will be greatly appreciated, as we wish to compile and print the thing shortly after the first of the year.
One of the interesting points about the reply cards is the energy which the class has shown in repopulating the U. S. You'd think we were single-handedly trying to outstrip China. At the time of mailing, the Earl Owen's fourth youngster, Julia was 48 hours old; the Hardy Caldwell's fifth, Tina was a week old; the Whit Wells' son Meryl has been on board two weeks, as had the Steve Tate's daughter, Laura, and the Mark Peisch's little lady, Josephine. Others in communication with the stork in the past several months: the Tom Magoons, Al Myers, Ray Snells, Bill Musseys, Fred Pages, Fred Grafs, Al Petersons, Chuck Glines, Bruce Thomsons, Warren Leopolds, Bob Murphys, Charlie Jacks, Bob Wileys, Chuck Regans, Perry Cravers, Jim Whites, Sherm Davis, Burgess Griffins, Mac Morses, Dick Ranters, Hose Craigs, George Reckes, and the Tim Towsens.
The Paul Carrolls also fit in with the above select group. The good Columbus, O., doctor has just been admitted into the American College of Surgeons. Indianapolis investment broker. Bob Myers won the men's golf championship at the Indianapolis C.C. again this year. Lt. Cdr. Bob Gifford is now back in the states and he and Helen are living in Monterey. He notes, "Have just returned from an exciting two years in Ecuador where we managed to survive the earthquakes, floods, street riots, and headhunters. Although we live within a 'good wood shot' of six golf courses here on the Monterey peninsular, my handicap is still astromomical."
Bill Orr is not only president of his own company and the Dartmouth Club of Springfield, but is now president of the Springfield Auto Dealers Assoc. Bill Hale, Ass't Sales Manager of -Lawyers Co-Operative Pub. Co. in Rochester, N.Y., is president of the Dartmouth Club up there. And a scoutmaster, too. Allen Pickard, Professor of History and Government at the Information School at Fort Slocum, finds time to hit the speaking circuit and will be principal speaker at the forth- coming meeting of the New Rochelle D.A.R. where he'll discuss "the Battle of Pell's Point," an important but neglected part of the Revolutionary War.
Wiley Hitchcock is up in Ann Arbor, assistant Professor at the University of Michigan. Bill McCarthy is now living in Paris, France, where he is Executive Assistant to Treasurer of General Motors Overseas Operations. Dr. George McElfatrick is on the staff at the V.A. Hospital in Ft. Howard, Md., and Gil Anthony is an Operations Engineer with Boeing in Renton, Wash.
Jackie Brandt kindly dropped me a note about the Buck. "As you can see on the enclosed card, he has been busy fathering five sons, all of them a small edition of himself. Also, he is a boat enthusiast, spending every available weekend during the summer on our boat. He's become quite a skipper. He is kept busy as vice-president of Eastern Tissue Corp. and of course, being a General in his own home."
I was also pleased to hear from lawyer Buzz Bensinger of Shroudsburg, Pa., who reports, "A few weeks ago, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend at our house with Jim Bodine, his wife, Betty, and two children, Nancy and Pattie. Both families, sans enfants, are looking forward to the spring trek to Hanover. I chatted with Buck Mansfield, successful Phila. lawyer at the Penna. Bar Assoc. meeting at Spring Lake, N. J., last June." And from Hobbs, N. M., Barrister Max Edwards writes that he's "looking forward to the June outing and to relieving Buck Mansfield and Marty Shea of their spare bills on the golf course." Max reports that the loss to Harvard not only lost him prestige with his Southwest Conference friends but a double saw after giving 14 points. He plans to come east in November and will probably take in the Princeton game.
Dr. Bob Wiley has got life well organized. He lives four miles from the Belknap Ski Area and about the same distance from Lake Winnepesaukee, spending the winters on snow skis and the summers on the water variety. Win Martin of Berwyn, Penna., has recently been named vice-president of Alderson Associates, a Philadelphia marketing and management consulting firm. Win specializes in the field of market planning and evaluation of advertising and marketing expenditures.
Ann Kanter kindly gave me a rundown on Dick since they were married in '52.
At that time, Dick had just graduated from the Army Language School in Monterey where he had spent a year learning Russian. Once he spoke it fluently enough to fool a Muscovite. The natural thing, of course, was to ship him to Tokyo, where we consequently spent our first year of married life.
Upon returning from Japan (where we had spent two lovely days with the Dartmouth Club of Tokyo under the leadership of George Chang) we settled down in this split level in Massepequa to wait for Lloyd.
In the interim between his arrival and that of brother Ricky, we joined the suburban Temple where Dick is recording secretary of the Men's Club. They had a golf tournament last month, and Dick won second .place. (Since you ask, his handicap is about 23.)
I'm allotted just so many words a month,so I'll have to put off 'til next month thelatest in the adventures of Whizzer White,Jim Lang, the cheery pride of the Ford MotorCo., Dick Ranger, and Gordy Plummer. Alsoa chapter in the lives of E. Buffum CrawfordHills and family.
Thanks again for your cards and letters.Hope they'll continue.
