Several weeks ago, in the dark chambers of Parkhurst Hall, a cominform of cash collectors sat in closed session discussing our financial futures.... and how they can be altered. What went on is left to speculation and micro-film, but we can feel assured that our agent, Don Pfeifle, came away with a plan of attack which should see the class of '44 strike to the fore in '49!

I am writing this from the heart of Yale town .... just spent a very pleasant evening with Diamond Fred Page, the local wholesale hardware king and NH alumni interviewer. Altho his new Oldsmobile had been clobbered by a truck just a few hours before, both were in good enough shape to feature a spin out to Ab Davis'. Ab, now with Southern New England Bell in Waterbury, his pretty wife Pat, and son Skippy are situated in a Dream house that would make Mr. Blandings' look like the Langley Collyer abode. It really is wonderful! Dick Rondeau, here in town selling Narragansett beer, will take to the blades with the New Haven Bears at the arena tomorrow nite. Bob Sundblad, research engineer for Winchester Repeating Arms, is taking side orders for the Republican Club of New Haven. Freddy informs me that Bob Rader, daddy of two, is with Western Electric; that Jim Locke is knifing thru Med school in NYC; that Harry Geiger is with Safety Car & Heater Co. (pretty strange name but I understand it is a good concern and that Harry is doing very well); that the mad scientist, Paul Jones, is, per Xmas card postmark, located in Boston; and that Dale Broughter is featuring real estate and insurance in Lancaster, Pa.

Dan "The Bear" Donahue is assistant to the president of N. E. Greyhound and doing a splendid job of bringing the 'hounds home safely and profitably Johnny Dingwall is seen frequently making the rounds of NYC as engineer for Scoville Harry Davis fighting long and hard hours at Abraham & Strauss, but then who wouldn't with a glamiferous, Petty-inspired boss like he's got! .... stopped in at the Stork Club to get out of the rain several weeks ago and caught the Maguire boys, Jack and Bill, and Jake Grimm making nicely to the Billingsly rhythm. Boston BobMcLaughry has flushed Niagara Power for Socony Vacuum and is now operating as sales representative in the New England area. I understand that Bob spent a little time with steel-man Joe McDevitt in Philly recently. West Pointer Bud Troxell is doing graduate work at the U. of III. and is poppa of two pretty wonderful little Troxells JimBrowning enjoyed an off-season skiing session at Sun Va11ey..... Phil Penberthy moves upstairs with the Newell and Emmet Adv. Agency this month after a successful tour with the Greenwich, Conn, affiliate.

Jack Riley, player coach of the American Hocky Association team which will represent the U. S. in the 1949 World Championship Tournament in Stockholm, Sweden, left New York with his charges Jan. 6. The 48 game schedule will take the team to England, Scandinavia, France, and Switzerland.

Clint Gardner, our international man of letters, and author of the fine Berlin Report which appeared in last month's edition of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, has just wound up the type of a year of living which we crusty commuters sit at our desks and dream about.... dashing off to the continent with a beautiful young bride, nesting down in a colorful Left Bank garret in Paris, becoming interestingly intellectual at the Sorbonne, running into old Dartmouths at the local street cafes (ie. TomWright, Tyler Welch, Doug Duffy, MarkPeisch), vacationing in the mountains of Switzerland, and then for a "raison d'etre" becoming assistant chief of the Neue Zeitung, the military government's official newspaper in Berlin where political intrigue runs high, the airlift thunders low, and unsavory Russians are thick as schmoos.... all of which seems to smack of more drama than fighting the 8-hr. swing shift in the swivel.

Our own Bob Smith will give the '42's Dex Richards competition in the Sunapee region hostelry business Bob has the happy matter of a marriage (to "Kerrie" Squires of Maywood, N. J.) to attend to on May 7 before really getting started on his new yearround lodge. It will be called the Field Stone Lodge, and according to tentative plans will be open for business this fall.... our host and hostess have generously suggested that any '44 passing thru the area stop in "and have one on the house." The Field Stone Lodge appears to be an ideal spot for football weekends. Bob passes along news of Dick Davis winding up the school days up at Tuck, and of Tom Close making the rounds of Vermont with the Bell system.

New England ski resorts have lost Dr. BradLong and his magic accordion to the US Navy Brad will be dispensing pills and potients in the Cuba and Florida waters aboard the USS Yosemite. There are a couple '44 youngsters we have not announced or welcomed yet the Al Cooks' little son Bruce, the Jim Donnellys' second addition, Deirdre Elizabeth, and the George Cornells' son Peter Wright.

I had hoped that last month's column would have been graced with the photo of Ralph "Budd" Welsh's cute little son Brucie; however, I have learned since from Charlie Widmayer of the MAGAZINE policy of not running baby pictures unless the Dartmouth father also appears. So let's get you good looking poppas out in front of the brownie too.

The romance department seems to have bogged down in the Christmas rush. However it is good to report that Horace Blood came through, announcing his engagement to Miss Jean Pierce. A June wedding in New York is planned.

That's about all for now .... keep the news and photos coming in and stand by for word from Don Pfeifle.
