The resignation of Larry Fowler as assistant freshman football coach and varsity wrestling coach and the appointment of Bill Craver to succeed him in these posts was announced in April by Director of Athletics Red Rolfe. Fowler, who served at Dartmouth this past year, returns to Michigan State, his alma mater, to study law. A graduate of the University of Delaware, where he was an outstanding football center, Craver comes to Dartmouth from his present post of assistant football coach and varsity wrestling coach at Delaware.
Two developments on the Dartmouth Rowing Club front this past month were the establishment o£ the Thaddeus Seymour Cup, honoring former crew coach Thad Seymour and to be presented annually to that oarsman "who does the most for rowing at Dartmouth"; and the dedication of a new Pocock shell bearing the name Philip G. Cole, honoring the Big Green's freshman coach, Phil Cole, a Princeton graduate and member of the Office of Development staff at Dartmouth. Phil, we might point out, is one of those unpaid volunteers who devote their time and talents to building the Rowing Club and Dartmouth crews into one of the
strongest organizations on campus. Both Thad Seymour and Phil Cole deserve a lusty Wah Hoo Wah from all Dartmouth men.
Elections of winter sports captains are still being announced. Rudy LaRusso, the Big Green's ace forward from Brooklyn, N.Y., was selected to lead Dartmouth's 1958-59 basketball team, and Rod Anderson, a St. Paul product and Dartmouth's top hockey scorer, was named to lead the Big Green skaters next winter. Freestyle and breaststroke ace Jack Daniels from Beverly Hills, Calif., will captain the Dartmouth swimming team next winter. Daniels, incidentally, won six first places and five second places last winter.
A note of sadness was struck on the Dartmouth sports scene last month with the news that Jim Miller '54, star Dartmouth quarterback from 1951 through 1953, had been killed in an automobile accident on the West Coast. The chunky Miller had his best season in 1952 when he established a new record in passing and punting. His career was cut short in his senior year when he sustained a broken leg in the second game, against Navy, and was sidelined for the balance of the year.
Dartmouth College crews will be among those from 13 colleges and universities competing at the annual Eastern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta (EIRA) on Onondaga Lake near Syracuse, N.Y., on June 21. Tickets for this colorful regatta, one of the best in the nation, are on sale through the Dartmouth College Athletic Council or the Athletic Department at Syracuse University.
Dartmouth's basketball team will take a 1958 pre-Christmas trip, meeting Butler, Vanderbilt and Bradley during the period from December 18 to 23. After Christmas the team will participate in the Queen City Basketball Tournament at Buffalo, N.Y., December 27-29. Other teams competing at Buffalo will be Canisius, Seton Hall and Brigham Young. The Big Green has never played Butler and Brigham Young before.
