The annual informal '08 gathering or reunion was held in Hanover last June with the following regulars in attendance. Unfortunately for him the writer was unable to attend for the first time in many recent years. Those who did attend were Larry and Helen Treadway, Joe and Katherine Blakely, Fred and Jessie Munkelt, Charley and Louise Walker, Harry Rogers, Sidney Ruggles, Phil Thompson, Art Anderson, Howard Cowee, Ben Knox and Harry Harriman; Art and Juliett Soule were scheduled but were unable to make it. It has been suggested that we have our gettogether next year when the college is in session - the May 30 weekend has been mentioned - and avoid the crowded Commencement conditions. Be thinking about this of which we will remind you later. The idea has much to commend it from the practical standpoint. Many classes have such gatherings at times other than commencement.
The big thing in the recent drive for funds was that the College went over the top. At the same time 'OB has reason to be proud in the manner of its cooperation. Of all classes from 1893 to 1908 we finished just a hair from the top. 1907 won first place by a point and nosed us out at the last minute. But we beat them in participation while they purchased more shares. There was glory enough for both and it helps to have the pressure released.
The class will be interested and grateful to know that Park Stickney arranged for the sending of a 1908 memorial gift to the Rockford Memorial Hospital in lieu of flowers at the time of Bill Knight's funeral. Here we may be pardoned if we quote a portion of Leila Knight's letter to a classmate because it is so fine and may be an inspiration to others. She writes: "Things are busy and more busy all the time between house, yard, office, volunteer at the hospital and maybe substitute once in a while this fall in High School, I find no time to be sorry for myself. I am thankful for so much and have such happy memories." That is a philosophy of life and not of death.
At a meeting of the Dartmouth Women's Club of Boston, the Club presented to Professor John Stearns '16 for the College a check for one thousand dollars for the scholarship fund. Prominent in this group were several '08 ladies. Mrs. J. Richard Lunt was in charge of the luncheon at the Hotel Vendome; Mrs. Percy Gleason is a past president and Mrs. Peter McCarty is one of the Vice Presidents. Certainly this club is a splendid and valuable auxiliary.
Bob Thompson is making a good recovery from a heart attack which struck just before the informal reunion. I think it is the first time that he was not at Hanover for Commencement time. He is now allowed two hours of work a day, following eleven weeks of doing nothing, but is allowed to drive his car which helps some. He says that he is far too young to quit work and we hope that he is right.
