We are shocked at the news of the sudden death of Bill Knight who died on April 28 following hospitalization for a heart attack which had followed a previous one. Thus, another stalwart classmate passes and removes from our midst one of our most popular classmates. Always active in anything concerning Dartmouth, law and football, Bill added honor to them all in prominent participation. Few men about the campus in our day had more friends, which can also be said among his classmates today. His cheerful smile and willing hand will be greatly missed Our sincere sympathy goes to Leila and the family. Bill's prominent career is outlined in our 50 year book. Further details will appear elsewhere.
Another Malcolm Stearns is born. Winnie and John Stearns '49 recently became the proud parents of a baby boy named Malcolm after our Mike. May he carry on in the same tradition. Further honors have come to John in his appointment as Secretary of the New-York Stock Exchange. He is continuing an already brilliant career. Congratulations, John. After all, you're our boy too.
One of the added pleasures of our Vero Beach visit was to spend three days with Chummy Bills whom many of us had not seen since graduation. He came up from Miami where he is now living. Like all of us — a little older — he is the same old Chummy and one of the best at cribbage. In fact he is a worthy fourth to the three established champions, Ben Knox, Harry Rogers and Bert Thwing who, in addition to that, were generous hosts at their quarters on several occasions to the whole Dartmouth contingent.
An interesting letter from Fred Hodgson to Syd Ruggles indicates that Fred is going to relax a bit. To quote in part he says: "My regular work will start in a few weeks now and I have decided to continue my profession a little longer with the already marked proviso that I am not trying to fulfill contracts merely for the income involved and will decline business which I feel imposes too great a burden." As previously reported, Fred has become one of the country's foremost authorities on pollens and is in demand all over the world.
With this canto begins your editor's summer vacation and your own from "listenin'." Can't close the works without a word for the big Fund drive which closes June 30. Last reports indicate that we are well within striking distance. Of course, Dartmouth "expects every man to do his duty." It now becomes a personal problem. Don't fail to be in on it. In recent years 'OB has been used to breaking quotas on every occasion and on the last report we were leading all the classes in our group in the "Go Dartmouth" fund contest. Let's keep her there.
Best wishes for a happy summer and "God bless us every one."
