Dartmouth's traditional Fall Houseparties game with Cornell is usually a thriller and this year proved no exception. Playing before a crowd of 12,000 at Memorial Field, the Big Green dominated the first half to lead, 14-0, but Cornell came back fighting in the final two periods to score two touchdowns and looked as though they might go for a third before the Indians intercepted a pass and scored the decisive tally.

For the fourth straight week the game was played in the mud, but the rain which had deluged Hanover in the morning held off most of the afternoon and began falling just minutes before the contest ended.

The Indians were impressive through-out the first half. Dartmouth collected its first score within nine minutes, with Jake Crouthamel carrying nine times for 44 yards. However, the Indians were held on the 13-yard line, but minutes later had the ball on the Cornell 22 when a Big Red punt was blocked. Gundy rolled out and passed to end Seth Strickland for the TD. An attempted pass for the conversion failed. Midway in the second period the Indians again marched downfield, sparked by some excellent passing by quarterback Bill Gundy (he completed eight of 13 for 131 yards and three scores during the afternoon) and the ball carrying of Jake Crouthamel and Al Rozycki. A long pass, Gundy to end John Henry, brought the second score, and Al Rozycki carried for a two-point conversion. At this point it seemed as though the Indians would have an easy time of it.

However, the Big Red of Cornell came out for the second half a changed team. A vastly improved defense stalled Dartmouth on the ground and in the air, while the Cornell offensive unit began reeling off yardage with alarming regularity.

As the third period got underway Cornell marched 72 yards, only to lose the ball on a fumble. Moments later, however, they broke through to block a Dartmouth punt and take over on the 5-yard line. Two plays later quarterback Marcy Tino smashed over for the score. An attempt to rush for the conversion failed. Again, in the fourth period, Cornell took the offensive and marched 68 yards, with Tino again crashing over for the tally. And again an attempt to rush for the conversion failed. With time running out, Dartmouth could not move the ball and punted deep into Cornell territory. The Big Red took to the air, hoping for a quick score which would bring victory. But a long pass from Tino intended for halfback Dan Bidwell was intercepted by Bill Gundy on the Cornell 20-yard line. Al Rozycki carried around end to the Cornell 7-yard line and then Gundy hit end Seth Strickland in the end zone for the score. Ben Urban's place kick was good and the Indians had their fourth straight Ivy League victory and were still in contention for the Ivy crown.

Fullback Bill Hibbs (47) pulls in a pass from Bill Gundy in the second quarter of the Yale game. He caught it on Yale's 22-yard line and then bulled on to the 15 for a 14-yard gain.
