THE Dartmouth Alumni Council came to Hanover for its annual winter meeting on the weekend of January 16-17, and discussed the Capital Gifts Campaign, the expanding Medical School program, and other aspects of Dartmouth's daily work; but the big focus of the weekend was the gala football dinner given by the Alumni Council to honor Dartmouth's Ivy League football champions.
The old Freshman Commons in College Hall, scene of Friday night's dinner, was decorated to the hilt with colorful shields, footballs, play diagrams, gridiron symbols, and plenty of green ivy. The dinner was attended by nearly 400 persons, including the entire varsity squad, the parents of many of the players, the Alumni Council and their wives, DCAC officials, faculty and administration representatives, and alumni guests. The freshman football squad and the Glee Club attended after the buffet dinner, served by the Hanover Inn.
Clarence V. Opper '18, Council president, was toastmaster, and speakers included President Dickey, Director of Athletics "Red" Rolfe, Coach Bob Blackman, Captain Al Krutsch '59, and Captain-elect Bill Gundy '60. Mervin Hyman, football editor of Sports Illustrated, was present to give certificates to Krutsch and Gundy, who during the 1958 season were honored respectively as lineman of the week and back of the week.
Each letterman on Dartmouth's championship team (including all the seniors) and each coach received a special plaque, engraved with his name and position, to commemorate the 1958 season; and smaller plaques were given to the other members of the varsity squad. Awards and praise flew thick and fast, and so did six of the actual game footballs, thrown from the head table by Bill Gundy to the seniors to whom they had been voted for outstanding play. There were no fumbles.
Topping off the dinner embellishments was an illustrated souvenir program containing facts about the squad, the season, and post-season awards; messages of congratulation; the dinner program; and the dinner menu (sample item: Chef's Salad Bowlby).
With Council President Clarence V. Opper '18 (c) are Trustee John L. Sullivan '21 (r) and Development Director George H. Colton '35 who led the Capital Gifts Campaign discussion.
