We just returned from a week of skiing in Vermont and drove back via Hanover so that my boys could see the College. We had a lovely room in the Inn overlooking the campus, and by the time the day was over, I believe I saw more of the College than in the four years I was there. Unfortunately, we had to get home and could not stay to enjoy the snowstorm we drove through all the way back.
While I was away, it seems that several of you '48's had much activity in your life, so I better pass on these major events to all of you.
I must begin by congratulating my old roommate, Jim Schaefer, who after all these years couldn't run any more. The new '48 gal who we are all looking forward to meeting is Eleanor Montville, originally from Greenfield, Mass. She is a graduate of Trinity College, Washington, D. C., and is presently promotion director of "Glamour" magazine. Jim is keeping busy at Dickie-Raymond Inc., direct mail advertising firm in New York.
As usual, the Nat Merrill family is making news, but this time Barbara is getting in on the act. She had a son, Henry Gordon, on February 19, while Nat was in the middle of the very difficult task of becoming a last minute substitute director for the opera "Turandot." Nat is assistant director of the Metropolitan Opera. The Merrills also have a daughter, Linda, now three. The opera was a big success after Nat worked day and night to have everything perfect. Some of you might have read the article in the paper concerning this feat where it discusses Nat as a "brilliant director in his own right."
One of Europe's most active businessmen, Sonny Drury, is filling the post of vice president of the Gulf Oil Corporation sales subsidiary, Gulf Overseas Sales Corp. Sonny's office is located in London and he and Joan are living at Kingsmore Lodge, Titlarks Hill, Sunningdale Berks. Prior to his new position, which he assumed last year, Sonny was manager of Gulf's Crude Oil Department for Europe, Africa and Asia as far as India. Stuart Douglas Drury joined the family on December 13, as a gift to sister, Susan Remington, on her third birthday.
Another classmate who has been in the news recently is Bing Aspinwall. Bing is a newswriter writing some of the big news stories and working on the special news reports for CBS television. The other evening I was very proud to see his name on the screen as one of those responsible for one of the big national news reports. Bing works with such well-known news analysts as Walter Cronkite, Ron Cochran and Douglas Edwards. On the personal side, Bing, Jeanne, and their four children recently moved to a house in Oyster Bay, Long Island.
Congratulations are in order for Tut Tuttle who has been appointed Director of Purchases for Ludlow Papers and Ludlow Plastics, divisions of the Ludlow Corporation of Needham Heights, Mass. Tut was formerly assistant director of purchases for the Hudson Pulp and Paper Corporation. He and his wife Elizabeth are making their home in Wellesley Hills. The Tuttle family also includes two growing children, Peter, 12, and Leslie, 10. Until moving to Massachusetts, Tut was active with the New York Purchasing Agents Association.
Last month, the Eric Swanson family moved to Lloyd Harbor, Long Island, after having lived in North Carolina a couple of years. Eric is now with the Sperry Gyroscope division of Sperry Rand in Great Neck, N. Y, It's good to have Eric back in our area again as we could always count on seeing him at all the Dartmouth functions.
In the political arena, we also have a couple of '48's in the news. Homer Young ran for election to the school board in his home territory of Amesbury, Mass. I am sure that Homer was a shoo-in, but just for the record, drop me a note and tell me the results, Homer.
It was recently announced that our own Dick Donahue is slated for a post on President Kennedy's White House staff. Dick is a Massachusetts Democratic State Committeeman from Lowell where he practices law. I haven't heard whether he plans on moving-Nancy and the family to Washington.
The Boston Herald had a very interesting article on Sam Katz. Sam, who is now pediatrician-in-chief at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, recently went to Nigeria, Africa, to direct the testing of a measles vaccine which he helped develop as a member of the research staff of the renowned Dr. John Enders. Sam stated the reason that they tested the vaccine in Africa is that they have very severe epidemics there of a particularly virulent strain. When he is not traveling around the world, Sam lives with his wife Betsy, and their five children, ages one to nine, in a large home in Newton, Mass.
The Heart Fund drive of Springfield, Ill., appointed Dr. Dick Herndon its Sunday Chairman this year. Dick specializes in internal medicine in Springfield where he has been in practice four years. Dick and Mary Lee have two daughters and a son.
Moving right up the ladder with the Travelers Insurance Co., and also to Hartford, is Bob Sherman. He was appointed as a superintendent in the casualty underwriting department and thus his change of address. I am sure that with the abundance of Dartmouth men in the area, he and Muriel will feel at home very quickly.
There was an announcement recently that Alan Epstein changed firms and is now in the new uptown office of the brokerage firm of Josephthal & Co. in New York. Good luck, Al.
It looks as if Keith McLoud finally has finished the long training required of a doctor, plus the time he spent in the Navy, and is now in practice as a pediatrician in San Diego, Calif. His address is 328 Maple Street in case any of you have children out that way.
I know his friends will be sorry to hear of the passing last December of Bill Terry and consequently I have written an article for the "In Memoriam" column. Bill was not married. However, the Class extends its deepest sympathy to his sister, living in Weymouth, Mass., and any other members of his family.
As this is one of those months that news is plentiful I could take the time and space to continue a little longer, but the rest will have to wait till next month as this must be mailed. See you then.
