Johnnie Ward was nominated by Mayor John J. Buckley for the annual Lane Bryant Good Citizenship National Award for 1959 at the annual meeting of the Lawrence Retail Trade Board. He was named for this award for his outstanding volunteer community service `and his "inspirational leadership in the revitalization of downtown Lawrence" The mayor also said this nomination was a token of his public appreciation for the measure of community service to the city. Other speakers spoke of his spirit of utter simplicity within, a humility of heart, and a quiet humor that never fails him. His sound leadership and his devotion to the extra duties he has taken on for the city's benefit have been in the best tradition of an inspired leader.

Swampy Marsh had a most happy B1st birthday on February 18. His great-grandson, John Lowry Marsh III was born at 4 A.M. that morning at Charleston, S.C. The boy's father is in the U.S. Navy and stationed at Charleston Minecraft Base.

The College of Advanced Science, established for the intensive training of engineers, held its opening session January 4 in Canaan, N.H. The new institution is the outgrowth of a conviction that engineering education has not kept pace with development and discoveries in science. The college curriculum is designed to give engineers with a bachelor of science degree a two-year intensive course in graduate level physics theory including higher mathematics and advanced physical chemistry. We note that Hoppy is on the Board of Trustees of this new college.

Chan Cox and Johnnie Ward were the only representatives from our class at the recent Boston Alumni Banquet. Chan proved to be the oldest alumnus present, with Johnnie running him a close second.

Bill Sykes sends his very best to all his old friends and classmates. He writes he is in very good health and expects to become the oldest living alumnus of the College. However ever he comes from a long-lived family so he may well make it. His mother's sister is now 97 years old and two sisters of his father are 92 and 94. Mortie Crowell has been experiencing some cold weather down in Kissimmee the past month, 35 to 40 degrees, and that is cold down there. Mortie is going to miss his son, Major Bill and his family, as they have been transferred to Korea for a two-year stretch.
