You'll have to dig way back in the record book to find a stranger season than that of the 1961 Green soccer team. Whitey Burnham's team finished the 11game schedule with a 5-6 record, but there the similarity to any other season ends.

Of the eleven games played, ten were decided by one point, and seven of those were by the identical score of 2-1. After eight games had been played, the Green had won only two games and had dropped six, four by a margin of 2-1 (Connecticut 2, Dartmouth 1; Brown 2, Dartmouth 1; Harvard 2, Dartmouth 1;

Williams 2, Dartmouth 1). The Green then came back to win its final three games against Middlebury, Columbia and Cornell, all by 2-1 scores.

Steve Chase, Hugh Johnson, and Ivars Babris, a sophomore, led the scoring for the Green, but credit should also be given to the fine defensive work of goalie Dave Smoyer. Also a word of praise for captain Jerry Pepper, who was an inspirational leader to the team from his inside right position.
