On December 10, 1960, an excited and eager group of Tokyo Clubbers met an equally excited and eager group of Japanese high school students aspiring for the Class of 1965. The interviewing session at the American Cultural Center in Tokyo was the culmination of initial correspondence and screening processes with schools all over Japan. Boys came to us from as far as Sap- poro in the north (on Japan's northern-most island of Hokkaido) and Fukuoka to the south (on Japan's southern-most island of Kyushu).

The interviewing was conducted by four groups. Yoji Hirota '28s and Larry Ferrar '58 were joined in the first group by newly arrived Navy Captain, Vining Sherman '38. These interviewers spoke in general with the candidates on the College, its goals, its purposes, and Capt. Sherman quite ably drew sketches of the boys for our record files. George Van Petten '43 and Dave Hitchcock'50, administered individual English examinations in the second group. Burton Martin '33, Ben Gilson '54 and Joe Stevenson '57 formed the third group, discussing the general interests, hobbies, personal goals of each boy. Don Bartlett '24 joined this group at midday. The last stage of the interviewing channeled the candidates into an "academic" group concerned with school records and scholastic orientation. Nobu Mitsui '43, JohnHarmon '38, Takanaga Mitsui '15 were aided by Sukemichi Ushioda, indefatigable father of Sukekatsu Ushioda '64, who has been a tremendous help in our efforts. Despite a temporary clash between "personality" and "Academic" analyses, all went well, much aided by the efforts of Grace Van Petten, Mary Harmon, Sarah Gilson and Mrs. Sherman a remarkable group of receptionists, combining the qualities of beauty and efficiency.

Socially, the Club enjoyed a Japanese Scandinavian smorgasbord at the Takanawa Prince Hotel on the evening of November 18. Among those attending were Walt Lamb'55, Mr. and Mrs. Kuroda, Mr. and Mrs. Ushioda, '64 parents, Don Geis '50, RayDickinson '37, and Chick Onodera '58s.

Special "Wah-Hoo-Wahs" this month go to Dave Hitchcock '50 and Nobu Mitsui '43, scholarship committee chairmen, and Sukemichi Ushioda, scholarship adviser.
