OCTOBER 1963 ROGER M. BURY, HARRY B. CUMMINGS

That which makes a secretary's cup runneth over has been received by your scribe during the intervening summer months since the last column. First and foremost, of which you are all familiar, were the wonderful results of the alumni fund and the outstanding pinch-hitting, Green Derby-winning job turned in by Bill Cusack and a great team of class agents. When to this is added an accumulation of newsy correspondence, all I have to do is try to squeeze it in the limited space available. Paul Hannah, vice president and general counsel of Raytheon Company, has joined the firm Gadsby, Hannah, Colson & Morin as a partner. Paul will work out of their Boston offices (they also have Washington offices) and will remain as Raytheon's general counsel, but has resigned his vice presidency. He tells us he is most excited about this new opportunity and promises a full report at the fall class meeting. Congratulations are due to BillAbbott on his marriage to Mrs. Geneve Mills, Saturday, August 10, at Lake Tahoe, Calif. Jim Picken, 40th reunion chairman, brags on the day following a re- cent birthday he shot the best round of golf he has had for the past ten years. Bud Wesselmann, Cleveland area chairman, reports a get-together at his cabin at the Pine Lake Trout Club this summer of Cam Clokey,Chuck Baker, and wives. Hale Ham unfortunately left early that week for a New Hampshire vacation, and Jim Chandler, who has recently undergone an operation, was still in the hospital. Jim will spend a couple of months in Arizona, according to Bud, not returning to the Cleveland Press until late in the summer. Walt Myers also missed because of being on the sick list.

Joe Hardin, a Florida retiree, escaped to the coolth of New Hampshire and sends a card from Hanover reporting a wonderful trip and picturing three feet of snow on North Main Street. Does this mean once a New Englander - ? Charlie Fleischer says that he and Mary will be in Europe the entire month of October. Charlie is still with the A & P Company as assistant merchandising director at the New York headquarters. Win Rodormer is also in Europe about this time, a coincidence which probably won't be noted until too late for a get-together. RoilyHowes sends good reports on Phil Thompson, Bill Abbott, Bruce McKennan, and Dan Libby and states "I wish Dartmouth, you and I, and all the world were more like they used to be." Doc Greener is facing a busy fall what with attempts to get Girault,Gillespie, and Welty for quartet material for the October 12 class meeting, which he will follow by another football weekend at Grinnell, lowa, with his son Jay and a reunion with his son Alan 'SB, now living in Prairie Village, Kan. Don O'Hara says his son Don '53 got his Ph.D. at Harvard in English Literature this last spring, while his daughter Susan from Hollins Class of '60 received her Master's at University of Virginia the following week. Credits it all to a smart mother! Al Lawrence wants to enter the '27 grandchildren derby and asks "How is nine for a target?" The next mail brings word from Marty Heifer that his family now includes eleven grandchildren, all six years old or younger!! Shall we award the prize right now? Marty goes on that Louise went to England in early June. He joined her in July for a visit with their son Mark '51, who has lived in Europe since '53, with two new grandsons for them to greet. Seek Speak for more detail. Note from Carl Weiss says that his son Carl Richard enters Dartmouth this fall and if all goes well will graduate 40 years after his dad did. The Burlington Free Press reports Lyn Smith, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church and president and director of the Shelburne Craft School, received the Annual Layman's Award of the Chittenden West District Teachers Organization, being cited by the teachers for his contributions over the years to educational ideals and particularly for his work in teaching crafts to area residents. Bill King still is having fun and satisfaction from operating Dexter's and has recently taken on the job of deputy sheriff, Sullivan County, N. H. The need for a little* influence isn't what it used to be but make a note anyway. RegVincent has been active with the parents' organization of St. Lawrence University since his son Reg Jr. is a member of the Class of '66. In the kudos department, Bob Page was recently elected president of the Massachusetts State Exchange Clubs at their annual convention.

A small meeting of a few of the '27 sailors occurred in the Basin, Casco Bay, Me., in July when yours truly and "Caribou" with Ed and Dorothy Jacob aboard rafted with the Don Gardners' "Borogove" as a part of the Cruising Club of America's festivities. Charlie Bartlett and his "Gurnet Light" were at San Pierre in the French Islands. Will spend a couple of weeks along the south coast of Newfoundland gathering notes for the Cruising Guide for this part of the world, for which Charlie is editor. Jack Draper reports cruising south of Cape Cod this year to get the swimming he missed on the last two years in Maine. Other sailors will please report in. Am sending a full report to Mike for Speakeasy inclusion concerning Ed Jacob's efforts on behalf of the Maine lobster industry. While mentioning the Speak, you'll be glad to know that LesBattin will pinch-hit for Mike Choukas while Mike is in Greece next spring. SamMartin from Portland encloses a clipping which shows the fine hand of George Friede's press agent, whom I'm sure is the envy of Madison Avenue. At any rate, the Bank of California has put in a full line of lollipops for children only to find that adults also like lollipops, and states "one of our best customers is a prominent Portland attorney, George Friede." Kay Prescott reports another son for Bill Prescott '58 and another grandson for Bill Prescott '27. Didn't say whether his name is Bill. Elmer Worth indicates he is still Air Force-ing in Virginia but not many other details. Ken Murdoch had a great freighter cruise to the Orient with his wife Faye and says they enjoyed freighter travel more than any other way they have gone in the past. He was recently honored by the Junior Chamber of Marion, lowa, as "boss of the year" while his son George '54 and a partner of his firm was presented with the Distinguished Service Award. A great night for the Murdochs. Bob Mix of New Haven, despite efforts to slow down after several major operations, was enticed into running for the Woodbridge, Conn., Library Board. After living in Democratic New Haven, he moved to Woodbridge where a Republican has a hard time losing, he says. Hope PaulO'Connell has sold you on the October 12 Brown game - Hanover '27 class meeting. See you there.
