1927'S PINE TREE FORTIETHJUNE 12th, 13th and 14th

The time is only two months away. If you have not already notified Ken Murray of your intention to be there, better do it now - his address, in case you have mislaid the reservation form, is c/o American Can Co., 100 Park Ave., New York 10017. Also, if you have not already done so, mail your check for $10 to Bob Funkhouser, 6 Dana Road, Hanover, N. H. 03755. This will insure your participation in financing our Pine Tree project. The total cost of procuring, moving, and planting the tree is approximately $2500. So far, 54 members of the Class have contributed $654, so we are only about a quarter of the way. Your check should be made payable to Dartmouth College - Class of 1927, and your contribution is tax-deductible.

Following his retirement from his job as Comptroller of the College on October 1, Bob Funkhouser had an operation for a cataract late in November. He says that everything went well with the operation, and that he will probably have his other eye operated on in the summer. In the meantime, he is working part-time in the Treasurer's office, in addition to serving as treasurer for special 1927 projects.

Our Class movies have now been set to music, thanks to Hank Murray, and will be shown on Monday afternoon of reunion. I wonder if they will now qualify as musical comedy.

In addition to those who have been mentioned previously, the following indicate that they plan to attend: Red Cleveland, Chuck Baker, Doc Greener, Hank Murray, Nick Carter, Sid Voice, Tom Gillespie, Seth Besse, Orrie Herwitz, Lee Gore, Gus Cummings, George Friede, Woody Burgert, Cam Clokey, Gene Sullivan, Tom Anglem, Art Keleher, Bob Tobey, Cug Daley, Bud Wesselman, Phil Fowler, and your temporary secretary, most with wives.

We were well represented at the annual dinner of the Boston Alumni Association, though we lost out on the attendance cup. Bob Stevens and Sam Wormser flew up from New York to swell the attendance, and I am indebted to Sam for a report of the dinner. In addition to the New York contingent, those in attendance included Charlie and Barbara Bartlett, Meek and Jeannie Slotnik, Hitch and Evvie Hitchcock, Shorty and Bertha Oliver, Lee and Ethel Loeb, Ding and Lu Heap, Bob and Doris Fall, Dinty and Kay Gardner, Tom Anglem and his new wife, Bob Page, Larry Scammon, and our New England chairman, Cug Daley.

Justice Larry Duncan of the New Hampshire Supreme Court informs us that FrankGeorge was honored with a citation for his distinguished service over the past 36 years at the mid-winter meeting of the New Hampshire Bar Association following his recent retirement as Judge of Probate. Larry says that Frank is about to leave for Florida, for reasons of health, and will probably give up his residence in Concord.

Phil and Madeline Fawler are presently in Spain, touring southern Europe from Portugal to Athens in one of Bob Stevens' Opels.

Rog's reference to John Wilson's having named his place in Hope, Me., "The Loonery" brings forth the following explanation: "We call our place here in Maine 'The Loonery' because there are loons on the lake on which we front." Seems like a simple and sensible explanation, not loony at all. (Now we're getting really mixed up.)

We have further information on Seth Besse's recent marriage, this time from Seth himself. "Adelaide is from Riverside, Conn., was a widow, and we met at the home of mutual friends in Riverside. In fact, at the home of a man with whom I had played in many golf tournaments since 1946. (If your golf partners won't stick up for you, who will?) Adelaide and I found we enjoyed playing golf together, and hardly noticed the near cloudburst at the Dartmouth-Holy Cross game, so we quickly realized that we were made for each other Naturally, we went to Pinehurst, N. C., for our honeymoon. We are certainly looking forward to the 40th reunion."

. Among several address changes received in the past month, only one involves a major change in locale - Frank Polachek has moved from New York to 11646 Chenault St., Los Angeles, Calif. 90049. The balance of the changes will be reported by Mike in a forthcoming "Speak."

When last heard from the traveling Burys were in Egypt, having visited Addis Ababa en route. They had left Cairo, on a steamer trip up the Nile, and planned to go to Luxor for a visit to the Valley of the Kings, and the Tombs. They expected to sail for home from England about March 1, having spent the latter part of February in Spam and Portugal.

If anyone knows the whereabouts of JohnUpham, whose mail was returned from Coral Gables, Fla., or of Fen-Min Tung, whose mail came back from 9/F King's Rd., Hong Kong, please let either Rog or me know.

The 1927 New York dinner will be held at the Dartmouth Club on Wednesday evening, April 26. According to Doc Greener, who sends this news, wives and other qualified female personnel are not only welcome, but their attendance is requested. The featured 1927 Man of the Year will be our great Class President, Bob Stevens. If you are contemplating a trip to New York any time in the spring, it will be well worth your while to arrange the timing to coincide with this dinner.

It's Alumni Fund time once more, and what we do in this, our fortieth year as alumni, becomes particularly significant. We won the Green Derby for our 35th, and repeated the next year. Since then we have finished second once, and third twice. This is the year to win it again, but winning will take more than hard work on the part of Sam Wormser and his team of agents. It will require the cooperation of every one of us. Under the leadership of Larry Scammon, Bill Cusack, Bob Stevens, and Sam, we've been among the leaders in dollars contributed, and have established new highs each year. Unfortunately, we cannot say the same about our participation. We can win the Derby this year, but we're in the big league, and we can't win without a lot more contributors than we have been having. It would be great if, by the time of reunion, we would have enough contributions in to assure victory. You can help achieve this if you will send your contribution early. I have just learned from Sam that he and Alice are leaving on March 4 for three weeks in Japan, Hong Kong, and Honolulu, returning in time to get our Fund campaign off to a roaring start on April 1.

Sue and I are about to leave for two weeks in Martinique, but I'll be back in time for next month's installment unless Rog returns and relieves me before then.
